I have been off Prednisone since 2 1/2 weeks and I am on 6-MP since a month. The best thing is that I am obviously in remission; although I am angered that I gained weight AFTER Pred. I was so proud that I didn't gain WHILE on Pred.
While tapering down to 5 mg of Pred, I already felt that my apetite was increasing and that I felt bloated most of the time. So it is been 17 days off the Pred and I wonder whether my increase of apetite and weight gain (almost a whooping 10 lbs) was caused still by the Pred OR if 6-MP causes also weight gain? Any ideas?
I still have a moon face and I am pretty angry about the weight gain, but it seems that I am hungry all the time and although I am pretty good at pacing myself, I still gain weight and I don't eat junk food. I still feel bloated most of the time and I know that the weight gain is no water rentention, because I can always tell by the size of my thighs if I retain water or gained fat tissue.
How long does it take to get the Pred (and its effects) out of the system? I have taking it for 10 weeks on an initial dose of 40 mg.
Has anyone gained weight on 6-MP or had to deal with a slower metabolism?
Happy new year and I will be grateful for hearing your ideas and experiences!

I've been off of Prednisone for close to a year now and I still have most of the weight that I gained while on it (went from 200 pounds to 260).  I've been working like a dog lately to drop the weight and so far I've lost about 15 pounds.  But from what people say I guess it depends on the individual.  Some have lost their Prednisone weight as soon as they stopped taking it whereas others still have it, like me.

I have always lost weight but this could be due to the ulcerative proctitis and the diarrhea even while on prednisone.  I've gained a lot of my weight back...I was 141 initially, went down to 125 while flaring and now up to 132.  I really don't want to gain any more weight.  I don't think 6MP makes you gain weight.  I take toprol xl for blood pressure and that is a beta blocker which slows the heart rate, therefore must slow metabolism.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

I was on Prednisone twice in 2007, and the second time I gained 10 pounds while on it. I too am on I guess 6 mp meds. (Imuran) Haven't seen any weight gain with that drug. I ended up losing the 10 pounds in May 2008, due to a minor flare. oh well, at least the weight went down. I'm sure the prednisone gave you the weight.
