Hi there and i'm new to this site, in short its to tell you all about what helps me and may help you.
I was chronicaly ill with ulcerative colitis and visited my specialist on a regular basis,as we all have too, my story is that i was heavily into to keeping fit and consuming alot of milk, yes the demon milk.My body somehow rejected the milk along with other foodstuffs.
I will skip along here as we all know how the disease affects us and how deppressing it can get.
My friend bought a "juicer" to make smoothies and stuff and along with it came a little booklet to tell you what fruits are benificial for the body,so here is the punchline.
Pineapple, yes this fruit contains a proteolactic enzyme (think thats how you spell it) that breaks down protein, it also, allegedly contains all the amino acids that you need for breaking down protein, this goes back to my training days when you would take protein and take supplements to help this process. Pineapple was also good for the diorrhea as it also contains alot of minerals that are lost by this process and helps to srem the flow as it were.
So in short, and as i'm not that good at explaining, try it after having a meal, a little piece of fresh, not tinned, pineapple and see how thinks go, but as with all lotions and potions, consult you doctor and dont stop taking any medicines!.
Please be so kind as to let me know how you are getting on though, and hopefully you will be well soon,

I'm glad you found your culprit. Unfortunately that doesn't work for everyone. I haven't had any milk nor dairy in over 4 years but yet I still flare. So it's one of those things that may or may not work for everyone. Most Uc'ers become lactose intolerant - not sure why though. As for the pineapple - yes it does help, at least for me it does. But I can't eat pineapple everyday since I'm not that fond of it. I eat it on occasion though and the fresh stuff is so much better then the canned stuff by far! :)

Hi and thankyou for your comment, i have always maintained that colitis is a digestive disorder and that the intestine uses mucos to flush out what it thinks are toxins, also the swelling comes from a reaction to these processes, also the stomach produces to much acid that is bound up in the process of digestion, so with this in mind the digestive sytem has to be "fooled" as it were into thinking that it does not need to be so aggresive in what it does.
When you consider that you could be visiting the can upto 30 times a day then the result in so much action in the bowel is going to have an effect on something.
What i will ask is what drinks do you consume, tea coffee etc, and also how much sugar do you consume. We all know how dairy products affect us but its not just them, i would flareup if i ate nothing, the reason for pineapple is that it digests protein and protein is used to build muscle and helps tissue regeneration, sadly if you are not taking in protein then the healing process would be non existant, this is where the sterroids come into play, they help to repair damaged tissue hence the reason bodybuilders use them but again if there is no continuation of aftercare then the process starts again, what do you think ?
By the way you are right that what works for one may not work for another and these are just my thoughts in trying to help so hope you donot mind me posting

Believe it or not but our supermarket does not have fresh pineapple. We live close to the "Sticks". So pineapple in a can will not work at all?

Glad to have you on board.

JR with a little more thought could you put you hands on rasberries, these are more for inflamation rather than digestion?

Hello S, i'm not saying canned would not work but its the preservatives and syrup that they come in, if you did go with canned it there was no results then you might give the myth away as just that, however if you go with fresh and there is no result then you can give it away, there is alot to be said for fresh earthly fruite.
A quetion i have asked today, i was told to cut out sugar, apples, lemons, tea, bannanas, all fruit and juice with a citric acid content, there are a few more, i even cut out water from the tap, bottled too,(the water was my own idea)it would be interesting to know what sort of diet people have and a varied one is not what i realy want to know, more of what you had today, what fruit, what drink.
The reason i ask is i was never told by my doctors what to eat other than a balanced diet, and cut out milk, dairy products, all half arsed (excuse the french) so was at the mercy of trying it out myself, my own ginnypig, at that sometimes came at a cost.
