I am scheduled to get a cortisone shot in my right hip. (I eventualluy will need a hip replacement but orthopedic wants to buy some time with this shot) I have not been able to contact my orthopedic about my recently diagnosed UC and was wondering if there are any dangers having a cortisone shot while also having UC.? Does anyone have experience with this? Thankss.

I had a shot in early 2008, for spasms from a bulging disc and sciatic nerve pain.
My UC was not at all an issue.

I hope it gives you some relief. Just FYI, I was already doing better by the time I had my shot, so I don't know if it helped. But since my golf coach/trainer, physical and massage therapists have all advised against the shots ("masking agent" or "stays in the muscles and keeps them from responding to therapy"), I haven't had any more...but I'm not to the point of approaching surgery.

Oh, and I know I should not, but I take Aleve, almost daily now. If I don't take it, or take oxycodone, I am miserable. Do you happen to know if oxycodone will irritate the UC like Aleve or ibuprofen? I'm hoping a long winter without golf or gardening, and with therapy and targeted workouts, will resolve it. If if doesn't I don't know what I'll do.

Thanks for the reply. I have recently started tylenol and that takes the stiffness edge off enough to get through the day. I think tylenol is ok? As far as oxycodone--I am not sure if that has negative effects on UC. I do know Ibuprofen tears me apart. I love to ski-both cross country and downhill so I need something to deal with pain.  (I am convinced that the years I took it helped with my UC development)  Good luck to you and thanks again for the reply. This forum has helped me incredibly!

I have had numerous cortisone injections - 2 for Sacroiilitis, 3 for bulging/herniated discs in my neck, and several in my fingers for trigger finger and arthritis - and I have never had any problem whatsoever with them bothering my Uc. In fact, they made my Uc behave a bit better for a short time and even afterward, my Uc never got worse.

And yes Tylonel is perfectly safe for Uc'ers.

Oxycodone slows the bowel down because it'a narcotic pain med. If taken in high doses by Uc'ers it raises the risk of Toxic Megacolon - it's a rare occurance but it does happen. But as for it being generally ok for Uc - yes, as long as it's not abused.

Thanks for the info red-34. I feel more confident hearing from people who are living this disease than those in the medical field. I hope my hip pain subsides for a bit with this cortisone shot.

Thanks Sherry. I have about 40 oxycodone pills and am using them very judiciously only on the worst days because I know he won't give me any more since he thinks I should get another shot! But this sciatic nerve kills me...
