I'm currently weaning off Anusol. I took two per day for a month but it didn't stop the bleeding. So I alternated between Canasa and Anusol, which effectively treated my remaining proctitis.
Female, Age 20
9 Asacol, Rowasa1000 mg Canasa, Proctofoam, Rifaximin 2/day
Digestive Advantage (Crohn's & Colitis)1 Florastor, 50 mg 6MP,1 Primadophilus reuteri, Remicade (5 infusions), 2.4 g Lialda, Forvia, 6 Colazal, 1 Anucort, Culturelle, Fish Oil, Calcium/Vit D supplement, 10 mg Prozac, VSL #3

When I first had bleeding, the dr thought I had hemmroids and she gave me some Anusol HC to treat them. It helped while I used it but when I stopped, all my symptoms came back. Then I had a sigmoidoscopy and the dr told me it was proctitis and I started Canasa. I still haven't gotten it under control.
Diagnosed with proctitis in March 2007 - Treated with Canasa 2x Daily
Diagnosed with UC December but had symptoms months ago - Treating with Asacol (feel hopeless)

I take Asacol 400mg 3pills 3x a day. I think mine has spread past proctitis. It has been a while since my sigmoidoscopy & I can't afford a colonoscopy to find out the details. I have been dealing with this flare since april 07 I think.

Do you have severe symptoms? Do they come and go? When I was first diagonsed, my symptoms were pretty mild. After that, I used canasa and pretty much maintained remission. Then I ran out of medicine and couldnt afford it so I started skipping days, eventually it got a worse. Now I have been under a lot of stress and moved to the cold and it has severely impacted my UC. I am dealing with cramps, that was never an issue for me in the past, I have urgency, I am tired, lots of mucus and blood, I go multiple times in a row, many times I sit on the toilet and nothing comes out but I feel like I have to go. SO much worse than my symptoms a year ago. I didn't even have to treat it and it wasn't a huge deal. Now if I don't take my medicine, I could be stuck on the toilet 10x in a day, half those times nothing will come out.

Could I still be dealing with proctitis or do you think it is more extensive? I have been seeing people with some pretty serious symptoms due to proctitis. I wish I could get a colonoscopy and find out...

WishfulMA--I was on 6MP for only a few days b/c it caused side effects--nausea and diarrhea for 3 days until I had to be hospitalized. While I was in the hospital, they started me on Remicade. It took me 4 infusions and the combo of Anusol & Canasa to reach "remission." I still have some symptoms left (like morning urgency) but my GI thinks it's IBS.

sicklygirl--Sometimes severe proctitis can be really hard to heal, so your UC may not be more extensive. Unfortunately, I don't think you can know for sure unless you have a c-scope.

Sicklygirl, I am so sorry to hear about how poorly you are feeling. I am from the UK so find it so shocking that you need treatment and can't afford it. We have the NHS here and I couldn't imagine having to worry about cost of treatment.
It sounds like you need to really be re-assessed, is there any way you can see a doctor? I don't know how medical insurance works or how expensive treatment is where you live.

I went to the GI but it cost me a ton of money. I just started taking Asacol based on her advice and it has been helping but I know I need the colonoscopy asap. It would probably cost me about 3,000$ to get a colonoscopy and I can't afford that. I don't tell my parents about all of this because I don't want to worry them. I doubt they would be able to help anyway. I really need to get insurance!
