So,...maybe I'm having bad luck, or not taking enough, but..I was taking Primal defense as it says on the bottle for a week, and it seemed my flare got worse. I understand there could be a detox factor involved,...but I take probiotics daily for the past year. I've tried different ones...so maybe its this one?

Any opinions or Advice?

Also, qoincidentally, I started a cheap brand of enzymes,..and compared to yesterday,..for being in a flare,..my bm's have cut in half.

Well, you're flaring....so you might consider taking some meds?

There are better and more affordable probiotics than Primal Defense. Consider Culturelle.

I think you can contribute the worsening of your symptoms to the fact that you are in a flare and not treating with any meds.

VSL#3
Progressive - Calcium and Magnesium supplement
FibreSmart - fibre supplement
New Chapter Organics - Unbound Energy, Multivitamins

Ive done research BEYOND what I thought I would ever do,...and learned that meds only suppress, and don't teach your body to heal. I stopped taking meds after 3x of getting on pred,...they upped my dosage from 40 to 60 to 80..because there was less response. Once I heard from my doc about 6mp, I was done. On a cellular level,...ALL humans are mades the same. We all might have different immune responces, but the foundation that lies isnt different,.....which is why I LOVE hearing about remission periods lasting 5,10,15+ years without meds.

Sorry for running off :)
But the reason for this posting is cause I've never heard of probiotics being harsh on a flare? Again,..maybe I'm wrong?

80mg of pred??? Yikes!! That seems like an insanely high dosage.. I hope you weren't on it long!

Personally, I tried taking probiotics and they seemed to make things worse for me as well- mainly they made me really crampy and gassy.

Look at the label on the Primal Defense. I used to take it but it is not just probiotics. They throw barley grass and I think like oat or wheat grass in there too. That might be a factor.

I used to buy the powder and cap it myself but stopped taking it because I didn't see much result for the price. Also they fail to mention how many billions of probiotics is in the product, for all I know it could all be expensive oat grass. Now I roll with Nature's Way Bifidus and Ultimate Flora Critical Care. Both of these have produced good results for me and contain alot of Bifidus, which I feel is the most helpful. I take 60 Bil a day.

Primal Defense also made my flare worse, after an intial improvement. I chalked it up to the wheat grass as I seem to have problems with gluten or anything related to wheat. Also, keep in mind that Primal Defense contains soil based organisms which is a whole different ballgame from most probiotics. I'd advise you to stop the PD and see if symptoms improve. If so, you've found your culprit.

And yes, any probiotic can potentially be irritating to a sensitive gut during a flare and everyone responds differently.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

Also,...it wasnt the barley....because I had oatmeal this morning, and an enzyme pill with it....and I was fine...

I spent a fortune on VSL#3 and it just made me feel worse after a full month. I guess probiotics are not for me, although I still want to finish my Culturelle stash.
21 years of UC which started after quitting smoking. In and out of flares which are usually triggered by antibiotics. Latest issue is endless diarrhea without blood or mucous.
  •  Psyllium powder
  • Culturelle probiotic
  • Pentasa
  • Colonoscopies show no inflammation
  • Stool tests show no parasites
  • Tests show no celiac
  • Entocort helps for a week or two then D returns

Try a different probiotic, the one I use with some success is called Primadophilus Reuteri made by natures way, have had no issues with it, only good things.

Does Lialda cause weight gain? I've gained 15 lbs since I've been on it & wondered if that was the cause or maybe something else.
