Has anyone had any weird dreams about their UC?

When I flare, I get very vivid dreams that usually end up with me waking up sweaty and being like, "what the @%&! was that?!"
I used to attribute them to serotonin imbalances thanks to my crappy colon.  I'm not so sure anymore...  I've had a few like them here and there lately but I'm not flaring.

Awhile back when I flared I had a crazy dream a few days before the flare hit.  I was on my back being uncomfortably rolled along by turning wooden logs (with bark on them) under me like a conveyor belt.  Alot of people were on the sides rolling the logs by hand.  A alot of different voices kept asking me, "are you there?" over and over again.  I ended up at the end with a giant log that rolled me over it like a backward slug.  "Here it comes..." the voice said.  When I got over the crest of the log, I fell.  Awhile.  It seemed all too long and then I hit the ground with my back and woke up sitting up.  I was out of breath and sweaty wondering what just happened.

The reason I tell you this is because I had a somewhat similar dream last night and I'm kind of freaking out (stressing) that it could lead to the same conclusion.    confused     I don't want it to be a psychosomatic episode that induces me into a flare.

I have very vivid dreams...I wish I could remember them, I'd become a writer!

It seems you're not feeling  quite in control, possibly? Feeling you "might" fall flat on your butt?
You're on your back...a vulnerable position for some.   especially while going backwards...

or..

You're telling yourself you have to wake-up to the reality of what's going on rather than going along believing (trusting) that everything is OK.

I love analysing my dreams..so many times they ring true for issues I may be dealing with or avoiding.

My one scary dream is that I'm driving my car (which is a standard) up a hill and I come to a stop. My foot is on the break and my car is going backwards downhill. I push reallllly hard on my brake with both feet, and even though the car slows down, it starts to speed up again backwards. I hate that dream!

The other one is that my back door won't stay shut, no matter if it's locked.

I can relate....and they ring true for how I do feel many times....but I find great comfort in finding out the meaning rather than worrying.

What do you think your dream means to you?

Dang quincy that's deep! I never thought of it like that before... I have always been a bit interested in dream interpretation. You have a good talent there. I agree dreams have alot to do with your current psyche and emotional status.

I haven't thought much about the meaning, I always assumed that I was being whisked off to some freakish Aztec sacrifice and feeling the loss of control. I wondered if it was my lack of control over UC and/or my life in general. I remember most of my dreams in detail, often I wish I could forget many of them.

I always hated the reoccurring dream of running through the swamp with beasts after me and I can't run away fast enough. When they finally get to me I wake up. That one is always fun. Not.

I take a sublingual B-complex with my whey protein shake after I lift. Could that be contributing?

Definitely could be the sublingual B-complex.  I also get vivid dreams with vitamin B-6 but not as bad as with B-12. My Mom complained to me a while back about having vivid dreams and I told her I notice vivid dreams when I take B-12, she happened to be taking sublingual B-12 so she stopped taking it and the vivid dreams ceased.

I dream so much that I sometimes have trouble determining whether or not something really happened or was just a dream. I don't try to get rid of my dreams. I use them to reach my subconscious mind and to learn from them. Perhaps your subconscious realizes that you are getting sick. It could be telling you to watch your health more right now. Try not to freak out. Your subconscious is probably just warning you. It doesn't mean that you will get another flareup. I understand the freaking out part. It's a cycle. Freak out - Colitis - freak out some more. Try to sleep more (We heal our bodies when we sleep), eat right, exercise, and reduce your stress.

My dreams didn't change at all after taking B12 and I've been taking B12 for the last 6 yrs daily now...how ironic though, an IBDer dreaming about rolling "logs"?!?!?!?!?

My most disturbing dreams are the poop dreams, it's always revolving around trying to find a toilet, a clean empty public toilet...funny how even in our dreams it's hard to find a clean, empty public toilet LOL!

:)

LOL..good analogy!

I have the dirty toilet dream as well...irks me.  Weird, however, because the one I do find has no door or something like that.

Nothing like feeling exposed.

I come up with the most imaginative story lines in my dreams, especially the bad dreams, they would make good horror movies. Fascinating but disturbing. But then I forget them.
I also dream a lot about finding a private toilet. We talked about that at length here once, about how everyone has those same dreams!

When I have a vivid dream I will try and scribble it down the instant I wake... often there is a short window where you can remember the gist of the dream, but it runs dry very very fast. Later I transcribe my scribbles onto a file with the date and it's kind of funny to look a year later and see a dozen or so weird dreams summarized. Like the ambien (?) commercial where the beaver, President Lincoln etc are all in the dream, my dreams tend to have an assortment of things at random based on some conversation or thought I had earlier in the evening, combined perhaps with some ongoing nagging concern that runs through my head. Plus, depending on my UC pain level while I am asleep, the pain produces some nightmare effect for good measure.

I have very vivid weird dreams as well. However, if I don't replay the dream instantly when I wake up, I will forget it. I always have falling dreams, once I had one where I was driving my car on a bridge but it started going like a rollercoaster-- extremely high up in the air, very narrow, not safe at all, large drops, it was really scary. It seems I'm often running from something or someone too.

Hmm, maybe I'll put that blank journal I've had sitting around to use and start documenting my dreams again.

Female, 23, Ulcerative colitis (pancolitis) since 1999; GERD; gastritis; osteopenia in femur head & lumbar spine from long term prednisone use...

Current Meds:
Lexapro 10mg, Azasan 100mg

My only input on dreams is the fact that when I am flaring and the pain is bad the pain works itself into my dream. That's when I know it's bad. :(

Funny you should bring this up, I was just thinking about my dreams.  When I was getting sick while undiagnosed I had no dreams for about 1-2 years (I know I must have had them but didn't remember any).

Now I sometimes get them.  The last one I had was creepy:

I was walking around an airport with big windows and bright sunlight and looking for my way through when someone led me to a huge cement door like 12-15 ft tall.  I walked in, and the door shut and clicked behind me and I found myself in a hallway, with tall concrete walls and walked for a while as the hallway made several right angle turns, then it dead ended.  I freaked out and knew that there was no way out of the door from inside.  Walking back to the end of the hallway where it dead-ended was a tiny window, like 8 inches square with thick glass.  Outside was bright sunlight and there was sand covering 3/4 of the window.  I sat down and there was a manuscript of some kind on a ledge in the wall that said "My last great love 7-24..." I did not pick it up as I knew I would be stuck in there for the rest of my life.  I looked at the small window realizing it was too small to fit through, and considered kicking it out to try and scream, but was worried about the sand coming in.  Then I woke up.

I never used to get such devious mind-**** dreams before UC - although I admit they always seem original and creative in their own creepy way.  Seems like a strange, alien intelligence at times - like my colon too - never ceases to fascinate me how dreams can pull all of this up and completely surprise yourself, like we have a hidden author in our brains pulling the nightshift...haha

I'll remember less than a dozen dreams a year, literally.  I'm one of those that for some reason just can't remember then.  Pretty sure I'm dreaming though.

Everybody dreams...so I understand...but the dreams we experience in the sleep before we awaken are easier to remember than in REM sleep...

Some meds will encourage more vivid dreams. I had them before I was on Effexor, but have had them more vivid since being on it. I actually love dreaming..keeps me entertained...lol!

I don't know about B12, I know vitamin E taken before bed can cause nightmares.

I take Xanax for emergency panic attacks that happen at night. When I fall asleep, I have the CRAZIEST dreams! Very vivid and strange!
