Hey guys...

I'm writing this from home now, but yesterday I had to admit myself into hospital for the first time in 4 years.....

Some of you may recall that I've been having a bad flare up with serious constipation...Had 3 BM's in 3 weeks, all only with the aid of lots of laxitives...
Yesterday, the pain in my stomach, kidney pains and nausea meant that I couldn't take it any more, and I took myself to ER.

Spend all day yesterday in the hosptial having various enemas and fingers shoved up my bum. Not fun. They took X-Rays, and the exact words from the doctor were " Wow. Girl, you are full of poop! Like seriously, it's almost up to your throat!!" ( obviously I hope he was exagerating a little there....but it turns out I had filled my entire colon with poo....and none of it wanted to move anywhere!)

So the enemas and soap suds, Milk of Magnesia, Flax-Seed Oil, digestive enemas etc haven't worked. Now they are concerned that the scar tissue in my colon from the flare may have made a stricture in my colon, stopping the poop from moving anywhere and effectively, bringing my digestive system to a halt.
Due to it being a weekend ( mad ) , they couldn't do a CT scan there and then, and so have booked one for Monday morning. It that seems to show a stricture, then the only cure is surgery....I'm so upset! I really am. Surgery means that I will have to start my University course all over again.....and as a mature student on a high pressure course, that is totally devestating to me. I moved to Canada because I passed an audition and secured a place in an Acting School, now my dreams are under threat.....

sad

Oh, and they've also put me on Predineson...(or however you spell it!) 50mg.....just for a week I hope, until things (pray to God) get better for me....I really wanted to avoid that. I feel side-effects already ( feel really shakey, and my heart-rate feels raised). Due to the real possibility of hurting myself with a ruptured colon, they have put me on a liquid diet until Monday....or until bowel movments happen at a spectacular rate! So I'm living on meal replacement shakes (yum...not!), prune juice, fibre liquids and stool softeners. Oh and of course my UC meds too.

Anyway guys and girls, just wanted to vent out some frustration and sadness....sorry. Hope things are going ok for all of you . This is truely a nasty condition we have.

Constipation in UCers typically doesn't get this bad.  You might ask your GIs if it's possible that you have colonic inertia on top of UC?

Sorry to hear you are going through all this. Hopefully in a few months you'll be past it all and be better than ever, and get back on track at the school. Believe that it will all work out!

Wow, it totally makes sense then regarding your constipation. Scary..but good you went to the hospital.

Where is the stricture they saw on the x-ray?

hope the surgery can help get you back to feeling better soon.

If you discuss your situation with the acting school, they might still reserve a place for you in the near future.

Keep us posted...

I would try drinking a bunch of Epsom salt in water. That stuff works by increasing the water in your intestines and can make your stools come out like brown water.

Hi everyone...

Thanks so much for all your replies....on days like today and yesterday, I don't know what I'd do without the support I get on here....

They are still not sure if there is a stricture, but feel its likely due to the fact that nothing is working so far (in trying to get out the poop!)...The X-ray didn't appear to show anything other than an eye-wateringly packed colon.
.I did actually have a small bowel movement this morning (thank heavens!), but it was only around 4 inches long....and I know I have a colon packed with the stuff!!

The poop itself looked quite healthy though, which is a surprise! Not hard or runny at all...just right. Typical.

But tonight I'm still in great pain with a distended stomach and a feeling of fullness and gas. I can't wait for Monday for that CT scan...I know most people have the opposite problem with UC (runny poop), and I feel for those who suffer with that....but right now, I would love to sit on the toilet for 2 hours and just expel everything like water!

If there is no stricture, it might be that the colon is refusing to work due to the bad inflammation and colitis....it may have just gone on strike! If so, I'm not sure what they can do to get the muscles down there working...I've head that the colon has to be removed in some cases.

I'm so scared...I'm only 29, but feel like 80 right now....

Thanks again guys for all your support. I will keep you updated with any news....be safe out there.

Hi Ontario girl!

I am sorta going through what you are but not to the extent you are... I have proctosigmoiditis (sp)? And, right now with my current flare, I can't hardly go poopie and when I do, it's only a little bit of string bean poopie (which means inflammation) with blood and mucus too.. The bad part is that I can only poopie LITTLE BITS at a time..... YUK! My latest drug is Lialda which I've been on now for a week, and I'm up to 4 a day, 2x in the am and 2x at night. So far, I don't really feel better but I don't feel much worse. Still having bloody D and mucus and FULL of gas and gurgling...

Anyhow, I have heard it's common for people with U/C in the lower part of the colon like us to have more of the constipation problem.. it does make sense because everything towards the end is all inflammed and nothing wants to pass through to the outside...oh Perish the thought! I've also heard that proctosigmoiditis causes more discomfort when flaring, which in my case it is right now.. Yesterday and today were the first days I have EVER felt pain since my diagnosis.. I just hope the Lialda is not causing that pain but I haven't been on it that long.

My Doctor says I have to give it till the end of January and if I don't have much improvement, he's going to have to go to the next step which is steroids... ARGH..

Good luck to you Ontario and keep me posted... sounds like we are similar in our disease maybe... we can lean on each other for support

Take care!!

Ontario... I feel for you. hopefully everything will work out with school and such. This disease is a b#@$%. And its so different for everyone. But I will say keep up the fight. There's worse things out there. It may not seem like it now, but we do have a cure in the surgery. There's alot of diseases with NO cure. And this isn't normally deadly... just uncomfortable. And it takes away our quality of life if we let it. Keep up the fight. It could be a whole lot worse, I know it doesn't feel like it but it could be..... Be strong.
We all need a pep talk from time to time with this disease. And hey look at it this way... you're becoming a poo expert like the rest of us. LOL. now if we could just figure out a way to make money off our poo expertise.... LOL. I am kidding... just tryin to get ya to smile and jest. I find it helps me. Might as well laugh. sure beats crying. LOL.

Hey guys, once again thanks for your support....back at hosptial on Monday for CT scan, so will let you know what they say...then I have the GI specialist on Tuesday too.....so much time of school, don't like it! oh well...just need to get better..

Thanks Susiebuddy and Unclebubba for your kinds words...oh, and Susiebuddy, the symptoms as you described are EXACTLY what I was going through in the lead up to this hospital visit..the little sring-bean poop (actually, I referred to them as cat poops...my cats were doing bigger ones than me at the time, I'm so jealous, lol!!).

I hope you don't get worse like I did, but I would love to keep in touch with you!

Be safe everyone. x
