This might sound dumb...but what exactly is an enema (examples) and what do they do to you?

Not a dumb question at all.  I assume many don't know and don't ask because they think they may be the "enemas" that clean out the lower colon...they are not.

They are a retained medicine in either liquid or foam. You need them.

I've used them for 20 years...increased during flares, then tapered to a maintenance dosage to about every 4 - 5 nights.

Yup, basically rectal meds used to treat inflammation of the rectom (called proctitis) and there are also suppositories but for me the foam (cortifoam) works best for me when needed.

My prescription is for three weeks.  I am to call the doctor after two weeks (or before if there is a problem).  Do you feel that after two weeks I might be able to taper - NP did not mention that.  She told me I should get some help in a few days.  I ask about suppositories but she said my UC was up a little left side so I needed foam or enema.  Before when I used Rowasa (which I can't take because of side effects) I used about 1/2 a dose to start and was able to retain it all night.  It take a few minutes of possible cramping/pain, etc. but it subsides if you just "white knuckle" it (think that was quincey's words).  I won't be able to get mine until Tuesday or Wednesday as they have to order it at my pharmacy!

Also, I know how you feel about treating from both ends - but what would I do for pills or ? as I can't take mesalamines.  NP mentioned antibiotics.
