I've read about alot of people taking Metamucil.  Isn't this a laxative??  I don't understand how it's supposed to help with D and urgency.  Can someone explain this to me.  If it works, I'd love to try it!

Metamucil is a fibre supplement which may contain a mild laxative to ensure one doesn't get constipated...being a fibre supplement it actually aids with D and C (of course eating fibreous foods is a better way but many cannot tolerate fibreous foods), always start with the smallest amount and only increase gradually if necessary, my GI told me to take fibre supplements about 5 yrs ago and I've been taking it every night since then with some success.

There is no laxative chemical that causes one to go perse in Metamucil...it's soluble and insoluble fibre, which both absorb water from the digestive tract helping the stools to not be hard/solid and for it to help exercise the colon by creating the bulk it needs to aid in the movement of the feces throughout the colon.

I've never used the regular Metamucil...I use the Smooth, which has more soluble than insoluble.

Basically, fibre absorbs water and fattens up to help create stool of some substance, whether one has diarrhea or constipation.

I use Prodiem fibre therapy, on the bottle it states "with a mild laxative" to keep from getting constipated.
