I didn't have to run to the toilet 2x-3x this morning before work. This is the first time in a month I didn't get up, get ready and have cramps and the urge... I haven't gone all day actually. I am kind of worried. It is always one extreme or the other. I hope I don't end up constipated or stuck on the toilet all night. What do you make of this?

Uh... so much sucks about this disease, doesn't it? Has your diet changed? Maybe you need some extra Indian food-- I know that'll take care of things for me. ;-)

Here's to hoping you can go to the bathroom...once... and not explode instead.

This happens to me all the time. At first it freaked me out too thinking ok now what???!! But the next day I was back on schedule. A day missed here or there is perfectly normal and fine. However, just keep an eye on yourself because constipation can also be a first sign of flaring or flaring worse.

chili = bad. I think that contributed to my latest flare actually.... I had been stressed, but I had a bowl of my mother in laws chili and within days I was bleeding and I got a full blown flare going on now....
34 yr old male. UC for 14 years. Started left-sided, most recent scope shows pancolitis. 40mg pred (as of 12/16/08), 12 pills Asacol per day, 1mg Atavan per day (anxiety) when needed, Fish oil pills, Culturelle probiotics, Multivitamin. Recent Endonasal brain surgery to remove non-cancerous hormone producing tumor on pituitary gland (and I am still more afraid of my UC!!) "I poop in the woods because I can"

I was already flaring but I know it can always get worse. I am hoping it is getting better and maybe the morning urge will go away. That would truly be a dream. More likely, I will be in the bathroom in the middle of the night with a bad case of D. Only time wil tell!

what meds are you taking at this time?
If you are taking any rectal meds..it could be a symptom that you're improving.  Adding a fibre supplement can help encourage regularity..bulking stools, making them softer, etc.

chili is fine, but will probably cause you gas and discomfort.  It  won't make a flare worse or cause you to have one, unless there's some pathogen in it..which can happen depending from where it's from.

*Heather* Status..Asacol  (3 twice daily); flaring since Dec 22, now tapered to every 3rd nite as of Jan 13
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~Bentylol (dicyclomine) 20mg as needed
~vitamins/minerals/supplements
~Probiotics....(Natural Factors Protec, Primadophilus Reuteri Pearls, Natural Factors Ultimate).... @ bedtime
~various digestive enzymes as needed
~Ranitidine (reflux);  Effexor XR 75mg(depression);  Pulmicort/Airomir (asthma)

This morning was back to normal turn On the positive side, my stools have been firm lately and no blood, D or mucus. I think I might finally be improving. I have been dealing with this proctitis for over a year with no true remission.

Quincy, the rectal meds are totally helping!! Thanks for the suggestion.

I am taking Asacol 9/day and 1 Canasa at night. Do you think my dose of Asacol would be reduced if I had remission? Is 9 considered a maintenence dose? I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. I didn't even believe I would be able to improve this much so I am thankful to be doing better even if I am not 100%.

9 Asacol a day is a treatment dose. Usually if you are in remission you can reduce that amount to about 4-6 a day. But it should be tapered down and if you notice any symptoms returning then you may have to up the pill dosage again.

I think it's awesome that you are improving! Here's to many more good poopy days! :)
