Ok, most of us lose weight when in a flair, some more than others. My question is how long has it taken you to get back to your pre-flair weight once you're in remission?

Thanks

Usually a few weeks. When I have a flare I drop 3-5 pounds. My "healthy" weight is 5'9" 133 or so. The worse I ever got was down to 118.

Funny how many people without UC would love to have this problem wouldn't they? It's one of the only "positives" for me having this disease - I don't think I'll ever get fat!

Also, my flares never last a month.  I start getting the mucous, then blood, go on Prednisone 40 mg and within a week it's gone.  I taper off Prednisone for 2-3 weeks.  3-4 months later it all repeats itself.  That's been my experience since being diagnosed 2 years ago.

My story is a bit different for weight loss.

A week before Oct 29.08 I used to weigh 140 lbs., then the UC started, first with diarrhea, then bleeding started on Oct 29.08. about a month after that, I weighed 125 lbs, now I weigh 118 lbs.

My weight loss was very quick and now I'm trying to keep from continually losing weight.  I seem to be hovering about 120, which I suppose for my height should be about right.  Food and drinks are all trial and error as that is individual for everyone.  The asacol seems to have finally kicked in the 3rd to 4th week but not completely for the bleeding aspect of this.  So, I'm still going through this.  The holidays, I pigged out on all the good stuff and paid for it of course.

The thought of prednisone is there frequently. I just do not appreciate the side effects at all.  But it would definitely be a quick fix for sure.

44 yrs old, only 3rd experience with flare-up start oct29.08, Ont.Canada. was 140lbs now 118
current: asacol 400 mg - 2 4x/day

last flare in 2004 with c-diff, went into shock, hospitalized 2 wks, rec'd transfusion
prednisone, asacol, metronidazole

in 2000 rec'd antibiotics(sinuses),c-diff,ulcerative colitis

I believe I would be in the similiar scenario if I didn't take the prednisone - it would never get better and I'd all but waste away. My doc said we can try new drugs and experiment after the baby gets here. I've only tried Asacol, 6MP and Prednisone since being diagnosed 2 years ago. I'm not convinced Asacol works, but don't feel like risking not taking it. 6MP I never noticed much difference and not worth the negatives of it if I perceived no benefit. I hate prednisone for so many reasons.

Right now I'm 32 weeks pregant and have managed to gain 17 pounds despite 2 flares and a bout of the flu.

I am having one heck of a time putting weight back on (especially now that I've greatly reduced sugars and carbs) even though I have formed solid stool for the most part...my GI doc wants me to see an internist for more blood work etc...I hope it's nothing more than just my lovely UC as I'm kinda worried.

Have you tried weight gain shakes like ensure or anything. I am currently drinking one a day, on top of my regular meals. I went from 170lbs to 150lbs during my last flare. I am scared that if I have another one I'll fade away so I am drastically trying to put weight back on. I am also doing weight training for muscle mass.

I am 6'0" so 170lb was good, 150lbs is not.

make sure you get adequate protein and calories. Good luck

I was using Boost plus until I read the label...lots of corn syrup etc and I am desperately trying to cut out sugars and carbs etc for anti fungal reasons; i'm only 5'9" and I'm down about 12 lbs in the last 30+ days.

Thanks

I wish I had that problem. The Prednisone denied me all of the weight loss glory ;) I am normally 5'10, 165 but between my last pregnancy and the Prednisone I am trying to break the 200 mark :(
