Does anyone in here drink smoothies or blended drinks? I have been a bit lately, as they are an easy quick way to pack in some nutrients (can put my flax oil, probiotics and whatever in one shot). (tasty too)

Anyways, just wondering if anyone had good tasty ones they drink. I am getting bored of the same ones.
I usually have half banana, maybe some yogurt, mixed frozen fruits, acaij berry and a bit of water.
I have heard of people adding oatmeal in the morning too. That sounds really good.
Anyone else drink em much? How about using whey protein in them to get extra protein for those who try keeping active or keeping weight on?

I've been making smoothies for breakfast for the last year or so. They're so yummy! I use plain unsweetened yogurt and add frozen berries - usually raspberries and/or strawberries, sometimes I add kiwi or banana. I also add some honey to sweeten it a bit, ground flax and peanut butter. My husband thinks the peanut butter is a little weird, but I really like them with peanut butter. I use whatever juice we have in the fridge to thin it a bit - lately it's been apple juice. I put it all in a big glass and use the hand blender to mix it up.

If you are ok with some sugar, these are real tasty.

2 tbsp jello banana pudding mix. 1 cup lactose free milk. 1 banana (frozen). 1 scoop whey protein (~20 g) Honey to taste. Mmmm...

1 cup orange/pineapple juice, 1 cup lact free milk, generous honey, 1 scoop whey protein, few ice cubes, dash vanilla extract. Kinda like a protein orange julius.

The ingredients are the most important part, increase or decrease any of them to suit your needs. The measurements are just rough guesses as I usually just slap it all together and adjust accordingly. Enjoy.

I love smoothies but when I drink them, I can never finish a full one without getting a stomachache and having to run to the bathroom. I don't know if it's the seeds (I usually get strawberry banana ones), or the milk/yogurt or what, but they kill me.

Don't think it would be the seeds that fast. I think they would affect you later as they reached your colon. More likely the milk or yogurt. Could be the cold temperature ?

UC warrior, I like the sounds of a protein orange julius. I used to love those drinks but there isn't one in my city anymore. I don't know if the milk would bother me now anyways, but I do drink lactose free milk. I will definetly try that one.
Do you find you do ok with the whey protein? I used to take it after workouts but haven't since my UC diagnosis...wasn't sure how I'd tolerate it.

I have a legit original orange julius recipe, I'll try and dig it up for you. It was a sad day for me when orange julius closed down at the mall. :(

I do fine with the whey protein. I mix it with milk (for casein) after my workouts. I buy it in bulk. I try and get the brands without artificial sweeteners in it. Its getting harder to do these days. I also take a NOS supp and 500mg of Ester-C post workout.

The variations of the whey drinks has evolved because I have got taste fatigue after drinking them for the past 10 years. I had to mix it up. I slopped some orangejuice concentrate and some honey in one and was like, ok I can work with this for awhile. Tastes like a creamcicle orange julius hybrid.
I've also been known to put orange gatorade powder instead of OJ.

I avoid aspartame like the plague and many powders have it in there with a few other fake sugars for the "carb-conscious" It may be them giving you trouble. They don't agree with me at all.

I like smoothies. I usually freeze a banana and mix it with plain yogurt and then add whatever fruit juice I have and frozen strawberries. Mangos are also good in smoothies with frozen strawberries. I use Stevia to sweeten things instead of sugar but it's getting harder to find just stevia without the xylotol and stuff.

Apple sauce is also a good thing for smoothies.

Smoothies rock! Personally, I start off with a few ounces of orange juice on the bottom, then put in my choice fruit (sometimes a banana if I haven't many berries on hand), then some yogurt and whey protein goes in and I'll top it off with a bit more orange juice. The berries are frozen, so no need for ice. I shake it up a bit and then put it on the blender (I have one of those "Bullets" but it is the cheap kind called a "Rocket" hehe). Since it is all done in the cup I use to drink out of, it is very convenient!!!

I add oatmeal occasionally to thicken it up should it need it.

ucwarrior-- what do you do for your work outs? Despite my flare, I've been working out very hard-- both cardio and weight training. I was working on training for a triathlon, but running just isn't in the cards right now. So I do lots of biking and swimming on top of strength training. I'm pretty much in a constant state of fatigue, but over all my body is responding really well.

Took a little time off b/c of a broken arm. Done all my PT work now trying to get my strength back.

Normally I do Hi weight low rep strength training. I am careful now with bis and tris due to my arm. I drop set just about every exercise. 80lbs-65lbs-50lbs-etc. Best bang for the time. I go as hard as my arm can take it. Lately I've done full range exercises with low weight. Just trying to get the speed/dexterity back in my elbow.

Cardio: I'm a sprinter so I go all out for 100 yds, rest 30 sec to 1 min. and go another 50. That is 1 set for me. I do 3-5 sets a week. I also have a nature trail down the road that is exactly 1 mile. I run it as hard as I can.

When I flare I don't do anything but a brisk walk to the stop sign and back. Just to get my heart rate up and stim circulation. I don't like working out then.

As far as fatigue, I've always noticed its mostly mental. I hate coming off a flare and feeling out of breath but I just push thru as best I can and alter my workout accordingly.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'll have to try them all out.

Ucwarrior and Ryan,

I too am trying to keep up with my workout regime, even if flaring slightly. I play hockey and work out and also bike long distances in the summers.

I am trying right now to increase the weights in my work-outs to put weight back on that I lost during my first flare. When flaring, I mostly stuck to light weights, or just pushups, and walking the dog just to keep a bit active...but it really wore on me.

Good to see keeping in shape is a realistic goal.

Depending on whether you like or can tolerate soy, I use it alot in the smoothies. I also use almond milk which is a little more expensive. I use tribest personal blender which is awesome for this too. You can always add nuts for protein and flavor by just grinding them up with grinder attachment. Can grind up seeds this way. Grind up goji berries to throw in. Can use the chocolate or vanilla soy or almond milk for some good options. I just cut up bananas and fruit ahead of time and keep them on hand and frozen. Agave nectar is a great sweetener, but its usually already pretty sweet.

Do the nuts or seeds bother you once ground up?

No. Really no reason for them to. They grind into powder. If you grind too long you get peanut butter consistency so be careful, lol.

Chuck--

My current work out regime is using the high-point method (if you ever heard of "Body-for-Life" by Bill Phillips, this is the method he has people use during his 12-week transformation). I stick with the 12-week time frames, too, as it is a realistic time to see and get results, though I'm not as hard core as some people. I was pretty athletic to begin with, but I find the high-point method works GREAT for me. I don't lose much weight when I'm flaring, but this time around I have-- but I think because of my workouts it was mostly just body fat. Working out and staying fit during a flare is definitely a challenge-- very difficult at times-- but it can and should be done. My philosophy is that the healthier I am going into a flare, the better I'll weather that particular storm.

For my smoothies, I add in EAS whey protein. It does have some artificial sweetener in it but not as much as most others. I have not noticed the artificial stuff hurting me, though.

There have been days regarding my workout where I have had to change things up to get through it but I'm glad to say I've never missed one. One thing I cannot do right now is run-- because instead of getting a workout, I end up running to a bathroom. It just moves and jars my innards too much that it causes very urgent, sudden and painful bathroom needs! So I too bike quite a bit. I do all sorts of free weights, as well.

Later!
Ryan
