I have been having blood since June 2008. What the hell is happening now is just baffling me. I was on Entocort for about 6 weeks and did not see much of a change. The pain went away, but that was it. Then, I was on Prednisone for a month and it did not help. Now, I am on Entocort again. It says that maybe after 8 weeks there could be a change. I am so frustrated. I hate seeing this blood everyday.

I've been having blood in my BM for about 4 months. And if you haven't already, you should inform your doctor. I'm trying the spinich and sunflower seed diet to see if that helps, but only after a week or two of a low residue diet. It helped for a couple of weeks, but I'm finding that it is more of a mask for the problem than a solution. Unfortunately the blood is just one of those great thing with this disease.
Ulcerative Pan Colitis since March 2008

Meds:
Balsalazide 3 750MGROX - 3 x per day
Prednesone 2 occasions (hated it)

Probiotic:
VLS#3 1 pack 3 x per day

I recently bought a new toilet seat :)

for some perspective, I've had blood pretty regularly for over a year. It varies in amount- during bad flares, it's dripping into the toilet, bright red, etc. Nowadays, it's pinkish smears on the tp, & maybe a few bloody mucous clumps in the toilet- along with solid, formed bm's! Go figure.... that's been my daily habit for months & months & months. I believe it did stop when I was on pred, but I haven't taken that in 11 months. After a remicade infusion, the bleeding lessens for a week or so, then crops up again, slow but steady. I'll mention it to my GI, but I won't go on pred again & that's what the general recommendation would be. Or surgery, since the constant blood obviously means the Remicade isn't doing what it should be doing, but I'm just not mentally ready for that yet.

diagnosed with UC '02
meds-
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade-10mgs/kg- since 4/07
Imuran- 150mgs/day
Culturelle
Fiber supplement

I have had small amounts of blood in my stool since May 2008. I was diagnosed with pancolitis in October 2008 and went on pred. The bleeding stopped then and promptly started again once I tapered off. My GI doesn't seem too concerned b/c my blood work came back showing that I was not losing much blood. I think that is that main concern. so long as the amount of blood you are losing is not significant, then life goes on!!!! I hope all is well!

Seeing blood every day is the most discouraging thing about this disease to me.  For years I had IBS - lots of bouts of diarrhea - dehydration, etc. but never blood.  It scares one!  I started with bloody D last April and scope showed proctosigmoiditis.  I have MAYBE had a few days without blood since then.  BUT, most of the time it is just a little in morning.  Pain is minimal, gas is better, urgency much better, etc. so hoping the UC will heal on the new enemas - starting them tonight. New scope in November showed "confined to rectum".

Probiotic Align, Prilosec for GERD
Inderol for hypertension,Xanax,Lipitor, multivitamin, calcium w/D, Tylenol
January 9 - doctor changed me from Protofoam to hydrocortisone enemas for two weeks - wish me luck.

It is comforting to hear that others are getting blood everyday as well. I get a lot right now. It is a large discharge of blood in the beginning of the BM and then the stool comes out. The stool can be bloody and it sometimes cannot be. I am on Entocort right now, but that is only taking away the pain I had. I am hoping that the blood goes away, but I am not optimistic. I was on prednisone 30mg, but that did not help either. Who knows what will happen now. I am planning on taking the semester off after I pass finals to get this straightened out.

I have had blood every day since I was diagnosed in mid2007. I had some good days where it was just a tiny bit on the paper and other days where it looked like something died in the toilet. Since I have been treating it more I haven't seen more than a little on the paper in a week or so. I hope it continues to improve.

Diagnosed with proctitis in March 2007 - Treated with Canasa 2x Daily
Diagnosed with UC December but had symptoms months ago - Treating with Asacol (feel hopeless)

Had a bad flare last year which lasted seven months.  Hospitalized for ten days in May.  Pain was so bad it traveled down into my legs to my knees.  Colonoscopy revealed Ulcerations confined to rectum.  I bled every day for months.  Finally reached remission, so there is HOPE.  Regimen which I believe helped me achieve remission....40 mgm of prednisone (starting me at 30 just didn't do the trick and I relapsed every time I was weaned off) with a 10 mgm per week taper (sometimes this is too speedy and 5mgm taper will work better), 75 mgm of 6MP, 9 capsules of Colazal daily, Powerdolphilus probiotic..2 capsules per day, 1 capsule of fish oil per day, Cort enema nightly, Canasa suppository in a.m.  I also take medication for high blood pressure, calcium plus vitamin D (I have osteoporosis from the pred), and multivitamin with Iron.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

Christine - I sure am glad that all worked for you.  So many of those I tried and allergic to them - all 4ASA and the Colazal.  I am just doing the enema - started yesterday.  It better work - I am sure prednisone would be next suggestion and I will resist as long as I can.

Did your doctor suggest the fish oil capsules?  I might try them.

Did you have diarrhea or just blood with pain? I usually get a large discharge of blood and sometimes soft stools that have blood in them.

I am the winner, or I guess loser in this case! I have had bleeding since 1995, it got worse around 2004. It is usually every other day or so. In 2004 I found out my UC moved to only in my rectum and it has been extremely stubborn. My GI kept saying it should be so easy to treat with the rectal meds but unfortunatley that wasn't the case for me. I am planning an ileostomy soon. Before I felt like it was wrong to do with only rectal disease but I have gotten to the point were the pain is unbearable and I am scared of my ulcer preforating. I am looking forward to getting my life back. Ironically I have never had Anemia. Good luck to you.

I forgot to mention that I am on Entocort. I was on it for about 6 weeks before, and did not really see a change in terms of blood. The pain went away though. I read that you can take it for over 8 weeks and then start seeing results. I am hoping.

I am either flaring and bleeding or living like I don't even have UC. My last flare was the longest time I bled which was about 11 months. I have been in remission with 6MP since July 08 and don't see any blood ever. When I start to see blood, I assume it's a flare. I was never in a lot of pain. I would have "contractions" from time to time when I needed to go to the bathroom really bad or when I had bad gas. Enotcort gave me bad gas and did not work for me because it doesn't make it to the end of the colon. When I saw a specialist at a research hospital he said Entocort was a waste of my money because it would never treat the inflamation toward the end. Make sure if you're on Entocort that it can even be useful for the location of your inflamation.

Thank you for posting this. I have been bleeding for a year now. I just had 6 days of no blood for the first time, but too bad it started up again yesterday. I am extremely depressed. Then I read this thread and find out there are others out there in the world that are bleeding too. Not that I wish anybody to be sick, I just am at the point where I am not sure if 6MP is worth it? Some of you who r on 6MP are still bleeding! Right now I am taking 12 asacol and doing the rowasa enema. I tapered the hydrocort enema and replaced it w/ the rowasa (and added aloe vera pills) and thats when I was not bleeding for 6 days. I knew it wouldn't last. I am just so torn about 6MP. Why take it if some of you still bleed?

I have proctitis in about an inch of my rectum.
severe ulcerative proctitis - march 05 diagnosed
current status: In remission (first time no blood since June 08)!!!! -fingers crossed
hospitalized - 3/08 for 6 days of IV steriods
past meds: colozol, sulfasalzine, hydrocortisone enemas, canasa and prednisone
current meds: asacol - 12 pills, 4 pills x3, nightly rowasa enema, Primal Defense Ultra Probiotic, fish oil, calcium w/ vitamin d 2x a day, prenatal vitamin & extra vitamin c and b12
if i can't stay in remission....next up 6MP

I would sometimes start out with a normal bowel movement, but with blood through it, then, throughout the day my bowels would get looser, still more blood.  Elaine, my nutritionist suggested fish oil capsules.  My doctor said he doubted they would do anything but they won't hurt either.  I believe they are helping my cholesterol which was a bit high, but not so  much that I need meds for it.

Its can go on for months for me or it may only last a few days. I know how you feel about the frustration of seeing it everyday and the anticipation that it just won't be there when you look in the toilet. I was like that for a very long time until I realized it was ruling my life. Now I try to take it in stride because the happier I am, the healthier I am. The less I stress about the blood, the more likely it disappears.

For those of you who bleed everyday or just about everyday, what does your GI say? Does he says that it is just going to be normal?

I don't mention it really- we talk on the phone every now & then, to check in, & I didn't tell him last time we spoke. I have to see him at the end of February & I will mention it then. He usually says to go back on prednisone- I may do a short course, things have been kind of funky lately & it may help. I don't know though. I think generally, most GI's would not tell you it's normal to see blood on a daily basis. Some sort of med recommendation would come, either steroids, or surgery.

When I was bleeding everyday, I usually had more symptoms to accompany it. So the doctor would put me on steroid enemas (I'm unable to use Rowasa) to get things under control. But sporadic bleeding doesn't concern my GI unless it's large amount. Before I hit this remission, I was still getting blood only on my first morning bm and then none after that. I mentioned it to my GI and he said just to keep any eye on it. This is the first time in a long long time where I haven't been bleeding. So basically I have bled pretty much everyday for the past 16 years.
