Notice- Obviously weve all researched to learn that not every way works for everyone, but PLEASE try this.
UC warrior encouraged me to take a log, so instead of sitting here going step by step,'s an attachment of my log.
You will notice ups and downs slightly because I experimented a little. Take this as a guide ONLY. I know it will Help a LOT on this forum...

1/14/09 (Acute flare for about 8 weeks)

8:15- diarrhea with a little blood. Took VSL night before.  Also did ok with rice and boiled eggs.

8:30- Fiber supp w/ 2 pills probiotics

8:45- diarrhea with a minor blood mixed.

10:45- banana

12:20- diarrhea with blood mixed.

1:15- rice with chicken breast. 1 enzyme, 2 fish oil.

5:00 rice with chicken breast. 1 enzyme, 1 fish oil.

8:15- rice with rotiserrie chicken. 1 enzyme, 2 fish oil.

10:00- VSL


7:30 diarrhea with blood. Some diarrhea

8:15- fiber supp, 3 probiotic pills

8:30 eggs. 1 enzyme, 2 fish oil, 1 vit D

12:00 banana

6:00 diarrhea with some blood

6:15 diarrhea with some blood

8:30 rice and rotisserie, and some potatoes. 2 fish oil, fiber, 1 enzyme.

10:00 VSL


7:15 diarrhea with blood

7:50 2 dates, 3 eggs. 1 enzyme, 2 fish oil, 1 vit D

8:25 diarrhea with NO obvious blood.

9:00 Half packet VSL

11:30 banana

1:50 chicken breast and rice. 1 fish oil, 1 enzyme.

2:40 diarrhea with some blood

4:30 chicken and rice, with tuna. 1 enzyme, 1 fishoil.

5:30 diarrhea with some blood.

6:00 blood


12:30 VSL

7:30 diarrhea with blood

8:30 diarrhea with a little blood

9:30 2 dates, 1 banana

10:30 3 eggs. 1 enzyme, 1 fishoil, 1 vit D

4:00 chipotle chicken and rice. Fish oil and enzyme

5:00 diarrhea and blood

6:30 diarrhea and blood

6:45 slippery elm and magnesium

7:00 aloe vera

7:15 rice and baked salmon. Fish oil, enzyme, and calcium.

9:50 3 tablespoons flax mixed in water

10:00 fiber with 1 probiotic pill


9:00 diarrhea with a little blood

9:15 hemp protein-half banana, half coconut milk, 2 tablespoons flax, 2 berries, 1 date

9:30 formed stool!

So, what would you say it was exactly that helped pull you out of this flare?
DX with UC Jan 07
Currently taking Colazide (allergic to Asacol and Pentasa) 2 a day
Also taking VSL3 X3 a day
Just started LDN 4.5mg

I'm glad you are doing better; however, it's hard to tell by your food diary what worked and what didn't work.

Eggs are pro-inflammatory. So are potatoes. Dates, coconut milk, and berries are high in fructose. They can cause diarrhea. Can you say these foods helped pull you out of the flare? Or were they offset by the other foods, probiotics, and vitamins? Or perhaps you came out of the flare for none of these reasons or for just one of them.

However, you did do it without meds. Congrats!!

Vitamins (a whole bunch of them)
Anti-inflammatory foods: turmeric, seaweed, garlic...
Avoid: anything with high-fructose corn syrup, foods high in fructose, artificial sweeteners

VSL is very expensive depending on your insurance. Didnt help me at all.

Not to be a downer, but just because you had one formed BM doesn't necessarily mean you've reached remission. Remember to keep up with whatever you do for maintenance.
