Hello! I have a few questions for women that suffer from UC. I recently started a flare two days before I was expecting my period. It is quite common for my symptoms to get worse right before me period. What is alarming to me is that I still have not gotten my period! It is now about 6 days late. My BM consist of severe diarrhea with blood mainly at the end of my bowl movement about 2 times a day. In addition, I am getting vaginal spotting after my bowel movements in the morning. Now, I don't know if this is a sign of my period coming on or what. Have others experienced this with a flare? Have you missed your period because of a sudden flare? Thanks for your help! I have a gyno appointment for tomorrow and I just wanted to educate myself before I went. I am 24 years old and have only ever missed my period one other time when I was about 17 years old.

Is it not possible that you're pregnant? Have you taken a test?

Perhaps because of your flare, you're only going to have a light period - the spotting. When I was really sick, lost a lot of weight and was flaring constantly, I lost my period for months. This is pretty much normal when you're very ill and your body fat drops to a low percentage.

Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.
Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, l-glutamine, vitamin D and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free diet. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

I lost mine for a few months when I was initially diagnosed and was hospitalized and was also very underweight. Otherwise, I've been regular. I've only been diagnosed for 2 years now and pregnant for 8 months of that.

I missed my period for several months when very sick too. Apparently that's pretty common. Now since I've still had some bleeding issues, especially around my time of the month, my period is extremely light. I'm guessing I'm shedding less with my period to make up for the bloodloss elsewhere? This month was really light for like three days, normally I have it fairly heavy for five days.

I didn't have a period for 3 months during my last nasty flare. Both my gyno and GI said it was because of the flare.

My period has been very light for the past few months and I just found out I am anemic. I was wondering why it was light but I thought it was my birth control pills. I always felt half asleep and in a daze. I was out of breath and my heartrate was high. Ive been taking iron and I feel a lot better, I am not looking forward to a heavier period.

Hormones,  age , weight loss, stress, medications, ovarian cysts....many things can interfere with periods.  (and of course...pregnancy )

It's good you are going for an appointment soon...best to get checked out..especially since you're spotting.

One sure thing....you can take your morning temps before you even step foot out of bed. (forget the name of it)...anyway...write them down to chart. You will be able to tell the day you ovulate, the days before your period and the day you will start. It's amazing how accurate it is.

If you're not ovulating...that could be part of the problem..

Keep us posted.

It's definitely possible to skip your period entirely if you're too sick. But, if you've never missed a period in the last seven years than that means you're regular. It also means flaring has never affected it. Have you started steroids recently? That can mess up your cycle.

I hope by 100% sure you mean abstinence otherwise there's a small chance of pregnancy. Hopefully everything is normal--good that you're seeing the doctor tomorrow.

Suffered for my whole life before being diagnosed.

Currently on:

1500mg x 4/day
Entocort 6mg once a day Completely off as of 10/21/08. Took 2 years!
Imuran 150mg once a day

Thanks for everyone's responses! I actually got my period last night! Annoying since its been a week late, has upset my bowels the WORST I've ever had it and I had a gyno appointment scheduled today!

I've noticed now that I have my period, the blood has become less in my stools?? I wish something could be done for women that flare during their periods. My GI doctor basically told me to "let it run its course." I miss work every month because of these flares, I cannot just let it run its course.

Asia, when I said I was 100% sure I was not pregnant, I have not had sex for several months since I have been flaring so bad!

Thanks again everyone, you've been a supportive bunch!

I changed my birth control to Seasonal. You should maybe ask about it. One period every 3 months for this one ^_^. Because of anemia and things they said it was probably a good idea. Also because I'm on pred, it can help offset the bone density loss.
