Hope this wasnt too blunt :)

I've seen your reccomendations all over this forum, and also noticed your not on meds anymore.

What's your story? How do you get out a flare, or stay in remmission?

Thanks!

Well, that's not entirely true. I am on a low, maintenance dose of azulfadine, but I limit medications as much as possible, preferring to use alternative methods.

In a nutshell, I use a combination of mostly dairy-free and grain-free diet, probiotics to rebalance gut ecology, wild oregano oil as an antifungal, antiviral and antimicrobial, and natural supplements to reduce inflammation and maintain healthy mucosa.

If you want more detail, feel free to email me.

Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, l-glutamine, vitamin D and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free diet. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

Princesa- if you see this- just curious how much of the oil of oregano you normally take; and also, do these natural antifungals/antibiotics give you any temporary flaring symptoms such as pain or D?  Pretty much all natural antibiotics such as grapfruit seed extract and oil of oregano, flare me up that way, to the point that I couldn't keep up the regimen long enough to see if I could get out the other side.  Often to the point of starting bleeding, in fact.  But I know for some people they were like a dream.

Pancolitis ~20 years, once had a full med-free 10 year remission,
but flaring/simmering on and off for years, allergic to all 5ASAs
12.5ish mg pred, 100 mg Imuran TCM
Probiotics (PD, Cust.Probiot., Culturelle, VSL3, etc), DMSO, TSO, hookworm
Turmeric/circuminboswellia, fish oil, many vits/minerals
Lower-carb version of Specific Carb Diet (SCD), Remicade

I had that problem with garlic, but have been okay with the WOO. I follow the WOO protocol from the book, Listen to Your Gut. If you're interested, I can give you the phases/doses when I get home and can consult the book.

Have you tried low doses and gradually ramping up to see if you can tolerate antifungals better that way?

Thanks princesa- yeah if you can dig up the protocol I would be interested. I guess, in light of my getting so close to surgery, I should probably go ahead and buy Patel's e-book. Anyway, I did try starting slow with all natural antibiotics. WOO was one of the harshest on me, as soon as I got up to more than a few drops a day. Then again my gut is super-sensitive- I tried George's aloe vera juic and it put me into a flare- actually had to bump up pred even- the pain was that severe.  But as for WOO, perhaps if I took a month or two to build up to even that level my system could handle it? How far apart do you split probiotics from the anti-fungals?

I've emailed the protocol to you.

Jini does state the protocol may need to be adjusted, depending on the severity of your infection or your sensitivity. She suggests easing into the protocol with 5 drops of WOO only once or twice a day for two weeks and see how that goes.

WOO can be contraindicated if you're on three or more prescription drugs as it puts too much strain on the liver.

There are two ways to eliminate infectious organisms in the gut: antimicrobial substances or high doses of probiotics. Jini's protocol combines both methods for best results. However, if you find you're unable to tolerate any microbials, maybe you could try the high dose probiotics and probiotic retention enemas instead.

I try to take antifungals first, then allow 30 minutes to an hour at least before taking probiotics.

Thanks, Princesa- got your emailed protocol before I read this post- much appreciated. Yeah, my guts extreme sensitivity to anyhting harsh may mean I have to focus on the probiotic enemas... not to mention possibly fecal infusions as well. I am on heavy hitter (Remicade) right now but if this fails I will try the fecal infusions for certain before surgery. But I am operating ona tight timeline now due to pred dependence and so I need pred-free remission within a few months or else off to the knife I think.
