Have been dealing with UC since I was a teen. Am now 40. Not so bad in the beginning. I would have long bouts of remission. Was officially diagnosed in 2001. Have flares on and off. Am taking 12 colazol a day and using canasa suppositories. Cannot use the enemas as I am unable to hold them in. I am currently having a flare and am so tired of having to go to the bathroom urgently 7 or 8 times a day. I have tried changing my diet but it seems like it doesn't matter. I am new to this forum and find it very helpful as there are no support groups for UC and those that don't have it just don't understand what it is like. I am thinking of trying probiotics and maybe an antidepressant for stress. Will the probiotics regulate me or make me have to go more? I have called my GI and am waiting to hear back. I hate to have to take prednisone again. Has anyone used an antidepressant for UC.

Probiotics (strong ones) made me a little gassy at first, but then it got better which I understand means they are not having to work so hard.
Some folks use anti-anxiety drugs, I found they had no effect. I'm not depressed or stressed, generally. I take a trazadone to help me stay asleep, it's a woman thing.

What do you eat for breakfast if you can't have gluten/wheat or dairy?

Dottie, many people on this site take and recommend probiotics, as well as a good diary. Those might be good places to start. Have you heard back from your GI?

It does sound like you could need the prednisone just to get your flare under control...but I do understand the fear of not wanting to go back on it! Also, perhaps you may just need to try a different medication...or it's time for an additional level. I only say this b/c I've had a rapid experience with trying different medications, dosages and levels of medications.

As for the anti-depressant, you may need an anti-anxiety...and yes, I feel they are greatly beneficial. I am on Paxil, and when I feel it no longer does the trick I go to Effexor and work my way up the dosages with that as needed...however, I've never been on more than 75mg of Effexor...and currently on 40mg of Paxil. I could not even think of making it through my current situation with a little help from mood stabilizers!

I wish you the best!!!

I finally got in touch with my GI doc and got a prescription for predisone 40 mg to start. Also started taking probiotics today which seem to help a little.

Good luck, hope it works quickly and you can taper off.

I also eat eggs for breakfast, almost daily, with a little ham or bacon. It's my favorite meal of the day. I especially like egg salad and salmon. Yep, salmon for breakfast. Oh, and I usually throw some spinach in my microwaved scrambled eggs, to get that in.
