Hi Everyone,

I am just getting out of a flare and tapering my prednisone. Now I am dizzy, and have a head and ear ache. It's feeling like a sinus infection. I don't want to go on antibiotics but I don't know what else to do. I am sure if I go to the doctor that is what they will say. Any ideas any thoughts on antibiotics that would be less harsh on my UC? I am definetly going to purchase some VSL to try and keep my intestines from getting worse. Right now I am taking Natren Healthy Start Probotics but I am thinking VSL would be stronger. Any input on this would be appreciated. O yeah I have been doing the sinus moisturizing spray as well but it does not seem to help. Maybe a sinus rinse with my netti pot............I am so so sad.

Thanks,
Melissa

I have taken antibiotics from time to time with no probelm. For sinus infestions I ususally get Z-pack. I also had to take Levaquin through my kidney stone issues. I have never gotten a flare after either of those antibiotics.

Same here, I have never had any trouble with the Zpack nor Levequin. I hope you feel better soon.

I too get sinus and ear infections from time to time. I used to take antibiotics for the infection when I was younger. However, lately I'm being told by doctors that there is no need to take antibiotics for most sinus and ear infections. Studies are showing that the infection will resolve on its own.

I will take antibiotics for urinary tract infections. For urinary tract infections, I've been told that it's important to take antibiotics to prevent the infection from traveling to the kidneys.

I'm taking cranberry supplements to prevent another urinary tract infection.

You can double up your probiotic intake while on antibiotics and be sure to take your probiotics at least 2 hours after you're done taking your antis or the antis will just kill off the pros.

I am a firm believer of Mucinex...I'm currently taking one for the sinus and one for the cough every 4 hours. I've never felt they had any form of effect on my UC. I normally take the sinus Mucinex at any sign of a runny nose or anything b/c of my immune issues. I sometimes even take a double dose depending on my head ache. But I also take Excedrine Migraine any time I get a headache, which normally is every time I wake up.

I hope you start feeling better soon!!! Are you pushing the fluids? I just cannot stress the importance of staying hydrating b/c you're nursing in addition to your health issues. My family almost took me to the ER last weekend b/c I was becoming dehydrated and not doing well at all. However, I really have been pushing the fluids and started having at least one Ensure every day...to get me out of my rut last weekend I had about 3 a day. : )

Good luck!!!!

Usually I just wait it out. My doctor said it's just like having a bad cold. Some times you just have to wait it out.

I did have this horrible pain on the left side of my face a couple of weeks ago. Most likely it was due to a sinus infection. I went to the drug store and bought nasal spray for nasal congestion, swollen nasal membranes, sinus congestion, sinus pressure. I used it twice. It worked like a charm. But then I'm not in the habit of using nasal sprays. I think with any medicine, the more you use it, the less likely it is to work.

I've also heard that sachoromyces boulardi, a probiotic yeast, survives antibiotics and is especially good to take while on an antibiotic regimen. I take some fairly regularly anyhow.
Pancolitis ~20 years, once had a full med-free 10 year remission,
but flaring/simmering on and off for years, allergic to all 5ASAs
12.5ish mg pred, 100 mg Imuran TCM (acupuncture & herbs)
Probiotics (PD, Cust.Probiot., Culturelle, VSL3, etc), DMSO, TSO, hookworm
Turmeric/circuminboswellia, fish oil, many vits/minerals
Lower-carb version of Specific Carb Diet (SCD), Remicade

Thank you everyone for your advice. I am thankful to have this forum. I am drinking lots of water. I just did a sinuse rinse. I am still dizzy but we'll see how it goes at work tomorrow. If I am feeling worse I'll go to the doctor and ask for the z pack and then go buy the sachoromyces boulardi probotic. If not then I will just keep doing sinus rinses and hope it will go away:)

I recently took a z pack for a sinus infection and it really did a number on my system. Yeah it got rid of the sinus infection, but it also got rid of all my good gut bacteria. The suggestion of doubling up on your probiotic is a good one, as well as the time between antibiotic and probiotic dosing. The z pack is time release as well (which is why you only have to take it for 5 days) so keep doubling up on the probiotics for at least a week after you get done with the pack. The probiotic you've been discussing (sachoromyces boulardi) is the main ingredient in Florastor which I've taken in the past and it really helped me out. If you are interested in getting some, I've purchased a 3 pack of it on eBay for less than $100, including shipping. This is a pretty good deal since a bottle will usually run you between $35 and $50, depending on where you get it. Hope you're feeling better soon.
