Hi. My sister is in the hospital because she is severely anemic (her count was a 4 when it should be a 12?). She was given 2 transfusions so far.  She has to use the golytely prep this afternoon for a colonoscopy and endoscopy tomorrow morning. Neither of my kids ever had to take golytely. I know there are usually some "tricks" to make it a bit easier to swallow.

Any suggestions I can pass on to her?

I did halflytely last time and used a straw and the orange flavor packet. After every glass I followed by swishing some 7 up in the mouth. Wasn't bad. The big straw is a must. Straight to back of throat.

Well, I used it with 7-up; not sure if the prep your sister gets will be flavored or not. Hope all goes well for her, Bennie. Let her know we are thinking of her.

Yep, she should likely be using Halflytely in her fragile condition, instead of Golytely-- less to drink + no. of accompanying pills was cut in half last year. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

The nurse at my GI drs office recommended immeditaly chewing a piece of gum after drinking the stuff because it gets the taste out better than any liquids allowed.

Last time I was in the hospital I chugged as much as I could in one go, then I took small sips of ginger ale or apple juice and swished it around my mouth.  Both are sugary and tasty chasers.

I spoke to my sister about her prep. She said it didn't go too bad. This is what worked for her.
She would chug a glass of the unflavored prep (several swigs to get it down). It was room temperature. Then she drank hot chicken broth (made from the little packets that the hospitals have). The salt from the soup masked most of the prep.

Of course, she did say the smell of the prep reminded her of the fish market we used to go to when we were growing up! Said if I could imagine what it would be like to taste that smell, that is what the prep smelled like!

I just threw up a little when I thought of that nasty unflavored salty taste!! I had to drink 2 gallons when I was in the hospital PLUS Magcitrate and it still wouldn't get things moving because I had been constipated for 8 weeks...

My last scope, my doctor prescribed me Osmoprep pills to take instead. A GOD SEND!!! No taste and easy to swallow. Amazing...

Golytely was not bad at all, or perhaps I figured out a trick. I dunno, either way, I want to post this here on the internet so it might work for others.

I call this the "Blow up your mouth" method.

You need, the Golytely, and a hard candy of your choice.

I used Go with the cherry flavor packet. The taste wasn't as bad as I've read online (but than again, I didn't really taste it). What I didn't like was the texture, I've read online that it tasted like sea water, I'm inclined to agree. The texture going down is what caused issues for me. So what I did to abate any ill taste or vomiting is as follows.

Use a candy of your choice, and put it in your mouth before start drinking. The object of putting candy in your mouth is to make your mouth strongly taste of whatever kind of candy you choose. I picked Jolly Ranchers because they have a strong sweet taste, that produces saliva very quickly.

After my mouth tasted like Jolly Rancher and nothing else. I started drinking the Go, while drinking it I plugged my nose to prevent smelling at all. Which left the only sensation I could feel, being the texture (thicker than water), which wasn't bad. It did have an after taste, which was a dull baking soda taste. After taking a drink, to get rid of the after taste I rubbed the jolly rancher on my tongue which made my mouth only taste like the candy again. The trick to drinking it is to have a familair taste and texture after drinking the horrid mixture.

I found the best way was to keep the candy on your tongue at all times, which for me, was kind hard. Because to drink any liquid I natureally wanted to move the candy to the side of my mouth to let the liquid pass through.

Now I hate vomiting, I hate nasuea. I am the biggest chicken, but I felt NONE. I was scared because of everything I've been reading here online leading up to actually doing myself. For me, it wasn't bad at all, but than again, I don't know how anyone else preps their Go.

I wanted to share what has worked for me.

I tried it with the ole chicken broth once. Chicken broth sickens me to even smell now.
