Ok, my GI told me that it's time for Steroids and 6MP! smhair I've been having blood since I was diagnosed. It's a little bit more then 6 month. Colazal and Lialda don't do what they supposed to do. I'm so scared to go on steroids. What could be side effects? How am I going to deal with it. We were planing on the second baby, but now it has to be postponed! Help, I need your advises! If these scary drugs WILL NOT help???? What's then???? It's like sucking you deeper and deeper with meds...I don't want life like that!!!!! sad sad sad
Diagnosed with left-sided UC on Sept 08 Colazal 5x2day, Lialda 2 per day (so unusual to take just 2 pills)
Canasa 1 supp. every nigh Cortifoam 1 at night
Vitamins: Zinc, B complex, Fleexsead Oil capsules, Multi. Digestive Enzymes (helps a lot)

Have you tried hydrocortisone retention enemas? They reach higher up than Cortifoam & also have a systemic effect on the descending colon, yet they do not cause as many side effects as Prednisone. Try not to panic. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Hi I'm redbulls wife my husband has been on prednisone for a long time he starts off w/40 mg tapers off 1 mg every 2 weeks . He feels great has more energy symptoms go away, when he gets down to 5 and under symptoms start coming back so we started asacol 6 pills a day 400 mg each pillso that is 2400 mg a day. this was back in November so far he's doing good but he also takes along with asocol 100 mg of purenathol generic name is mercaptopurine, 1 mg of folic acid, 20 mg acidfex. We are down to 4 mg prednisone he is doing good so far. Don't be afraid of prednisone he does very well on prednisone. That is realy the only thing that gave relief hopefully the asacol along with the other meds will allow him to get off of prednisone.Good Luck.We have been dealing with UC since 2003.

I'd try a short course of pred before I'd get on an immunosuppresant drug. If you start at a moderate dose and taper fairly quickly, side effects will be minimized.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.
Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, l-glutamine, vitamin D and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free diet. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

hello, i am sorry for everything that is going on. i know exactly how you feel. i would also just try the prednisone before going to Imuran. after you taper the prednisone see what happens and then make a decision.  i would also recommend trying a steriod enema as it reaches higher up into your colon. the foam is good for proctitis - though it never helped me. you never know what might do the trick. in my case..nothing did and now i am on 6MP and prednisone after a major flare that sent me to the hospital. hang in there!

severe ulcerative proctitis - march 05 diagnosed
proctosigmoiditis - january 09 diagnosed
hospitalized - 3/08 for 6 days of IV steriods
hospitalized - 1/09 for 5 days of IV steriods / put on 6MP (50 mgs)
past meds: colozol, sulfasalzine, hydrocortisone enemas, canasa, rowasa and prednisone
current meds: 6MP (50mgs), Asacol 12 pills,  Primal Defense Ultra Probiotic, fish oil, calcium w/ vitamin d 2x a day, prenatal vitamin & extra vitamin c and b12

I will ask for enema, but I'm not taking Pred.!!!!! I don't want to suffer more then I do right now...Let me put it strait. I don't have D, mjy stool looks normal. However, when i have my colonoscopy, I had polip which was ubnormal (no cancer yet). So, my GI conserns about my flare...BUT I FEEL NORMAL, just a little bit blood

well, in that case I would opt for the enemas, too. Since you don't have D and normal looking stool. So there is blood? Try the enemas first before getting out the big guns named Pred and 6-MP.

All the best for you!

Sounds like you are not really flaring, you just have inflamation, but that your GI is hoping to nip it early. If it's not bothering you...maybe you could avoid the prednisone. But I know I am sure grateful for it when I'm flaring badly, because it works. My side effects, over many years, have always been temporary.

Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; started diet without gluten, soy, dairy, tomato etc. Replete$$ probiotic powder, then Forte, now a stronger one (50 billion). Doing much better, but still having some bad days.

Before tyring 6mp.  Ask to take Rowassa enema. Also how long were you on colozal?  I take 3 pills 3 times a day.  It took 3 months for it to start to work. Which I thought was odd but I did some reading and that is what the meds say. It takes sometime for it to get into your system. 6mp can take up to 2 months to work.
Ask to try a stronger dosage of colozal and take rowassa. before going into the strong drug class.  If he is willing to give you a pred. treatment for a short time. That may help until the other meds kick in.  but just rule out the others didn't work before tyring 6mp.
Colazal - 9 pills
Rowassa Enema - 1 nightly
VSL#3 DS - 4 packet daily (perscription)
Multi Vitiam - 1 daily
Vitiam C - 500mg daily
Nexium - 1 pill daily
Asacol - 9 pills
Lialda - 4 pills daily
Culturelle- 1 daily
