Hi redbull. I'm new here and I read your post and I've had kidney stones too. I'm 24 years old and I was diagnosed with UC when I was 12 years old and after two years with my body rejecting steriods my body started forming cancerous cells. At the age of 14 I had to have my large intestines removed and I had a ileostomy for two years and then at 16 I had a j-pouch done. Since having that j-pouch surgery done I have noticed that I passed kidney stones at least twice every couple of months.

Oh if UC wasnt enough!

I have had 4x since being dx with UC. I have had 1x blasted via lithotripsy. The others passed on their own. My last one was a few months ago.... I passed it at work into a paint strainer....yeeeeeooowwwch.... Actually it hurt worse in my backside before it passed. When it let loose inside, the pressure went away and the pain was gone in minutes. Actually passing it was painless, but I still strained into a paint strainer because I knew it was a stone.

I have learned a few things:
1.) Keep hydrated
2.) Avoid Coke and Pepsi...namely Coke
3.) Avoid caffinated drinks....I still cant drink coffee.\
4.) Drink crangrape, cranberry, or similar....but try to get natural instead of concentrate....too much sugar.
5.) Keep hydrated
6.) Drink lots of water
7.) Keep hydrated....

I am guessing that being dehydrated is a big contributor....add Coke in place of water, along with some UC meds like Sulfa and you have a kidney stone recipe.
34 yr old male. UC for 14 years. Recent Endonasal brain surgery to remove non-cancerous hormone producing tumor on pituitary gland (and I am still more afraid of my UC!!) "I poop in the woods because I can"

I wasn't in a lot of pain with my stone. We discovered it by accident. I had blood in my urine at my yearly OBGYN visit, so my doctor sent off a culture. Never called me back because the culture didn't grow anything. Months laster my urine started looking very dark (the color of tea or coke). Went back to OBGYN thinking UTI and he said, "no there's blood again I'm sending you for an IVP (kidney x-ray with contrast)" Sure enough a 1cm stone in right kidney. Had it balsted and thought all was passed only to be in terrible pain and had to go to the ER where a CT revealed I then had a 4mm fragment I was passing. Very painful. Be careful with pain meds. THEY WILL CONSTIPATE YOU. I learned that the hard way. I actually thought I had an intestinal blockage due to being constipated from Lortab. It was just the 4mm fragment. My GI says there is no relation between UC and kidney Stones but there is between Chrons and kidney Stones. I rarely drink coke or tea and was also told to avoid spinach which I rarely eat anyway. My urine still looks like coke despite being negative for blood and I had a clean CT a few weeks ago. We are waiting on the results of more blood work and urine tests. My urologist has said he doesn't know what is going on, so we're just going to start running every test he can think of. Doesn't make me feel very optimistic.

I used to get bladder infections all the time but never any kidney stones. I don't drink much soda at all though, just mostly water and gatorade, so maybe that's why. But then again, I used to drink an energy drink every single day so I was always just waiting for a kidney stone, but never got them. Do you think some people are more predisposed to them than others?

I've had kidney stones for the last 13 years, but was only diagnosed with UC 2 years ago.  My docs have explained that you can be predisopsed to stones because they can be genetic.  When I first started having them my doc sent some to be analyzed and the test showed they were made of citric acid ( I was drinking over a gallon of orange juice a day; I love that stuff tongue .  I stopped drinking OJ for about 4 years. A few years ago I had two others analyzed and they were made of calcium.  My doc ran some blood work and found that my body does not absorb calcium correctly so there is a build up in my kidneys.  Then they did an IVP and found that I have sediment in my kidneys...The moral to this story is to stay hydrated.  I find that I mostly end up passing stones in the summer when it is most hot.  I live in TX so the summers are hot, hot, hot!  I've always wondered if along with genetics if there is a link to UC, kidney stones, and gall stones...all of which I have or have had.

Good luck with your stones!!

I got kidney stones once. I was taking calcium supps because I was on prednisone and am trying to avoid getting any osteoporosis and stuff. But I was taking the wrong salt form so I got stones. Passed in 3 days. Never had so much pain in my life. Now I'm on a chelated form of calcium which isn't supposed to form stones as easily.

Hello all
I have had 3 bouts with k-stones and 1 gallstone and there are more lurking around to cause trouble I have had U.C. or Crohns for 18 years and I have been bipassed with a ilieostomy 4 years and have had the stones within these 4 years so I am sure it has to do with dehidration. Going into the hospital jan 30th for a total colectomy. Fun Fun Fun

I have kidney stones in both sides at this time. Been having them years before my UC showed up.
Had them blasted twice, but they always return.
Luckily they are "quiet" .

Have a huge one in my right kidney that will need to be cut out some day, they say, too big to blast.
23 years of UC which started after quitting smoking. In and out of flares which are usually triggered by antibiotics. Latest issue is endless diarrhea without blood or mucous.

i had one and went to a urologist after it passed. He said to drink lemonade...that the combinaton of sugar, acid etc. helps to keep them from forming. My mom had one a few years back and the ER doc said to drink beer.
