Four Asacol a day is not a treatment dose. Are you flaring right now? It's good you are on medication but 4 is hardly anything for a flare. That is considered a maintenance dose. Why did he start the dosing so low? But if you can get relief on such a small dose then good! :) Everyone is different on how fast they respond. It depends on the severity of the inflammation. After you have your c-scope, let us know how it goes ok?

I have to agree that is not a high dose, when i took it for maintenance i was taking 3 pills, 3 times a day...also i agree it is not meant to stop a flare, but more for a compliment/maintenance drug once your flare is under control...It did not work for me though so i am unable to comment on how long it would take to help..

I agree, you should be taking 3-4/3x day (up to 12) if you are flaring and that's all you've been given to treat it. My maintenance dose is 3/2x day.

And yes, unfortunately when you are flaring sometimes it doesn't stay in the colon long enough to dissolve (the coating is designed so it won't dissolve in your stomach but will instead dissolve when it gets exposed to the ph level that is in the colon). Sucks to see the pills go through unused! All the reason to hit it with more, though.

Also, are you taking the One-A-Day brand probiotic, made by the vitamin people? It's probably not strong enough, there are lots better ones, look for the threads on that.

I hope you feel better soon. Ask about that dose!

Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; started diet without gluten, soy, dairy, tomato etc. Replete$$ probiotic powder, then Forte, now a stronger one (50 billion). Doing much better, but still having some bad days.

Are you sure your doctor wants you on such a low dosage?  I am on Colazal.  While flaring I had to take three pills three times a day...now down to two pills three times a day.

You are getting the medicine. My doctor told me when I was on Asacol that I would pass the empty medicine shells. He said I was getting the medicine and that was just the shell.

Hi...no rectal meds? He'll probably up the dosage by two...to 6 daily and then go from there.

I disagree about putting you on the max dosage of 12....

After your c-scope, he'll probably (hopefully) add rectal meds.

He would have to take the medicine out of your stool and examine it before he could justify that answer. Otherwise he is just guessing, and should say that he is.

I never thought about it like that. My pharmacist said the same thing so I assumed it to be true.
