I am scheduled to have a colonoscopy this Friday. My nerves are shot. I shake so bad I can hardly type. I am terrified they will find something even though I have straightened back out pretty much from my episode of 4 bms a few weeks back in 5 hours. However, I still have a good deal of gas on and off depending on what I eat. I dread the prep more than anything, two bottles of magnesium citrate, and 4 dulcolax.

I cannot get past thinking about someone on another board posting about colon cancer at 40, they mentioned gas as a symptom, I have never read that gas was a symptom of colon cancer. My doctor put me on phazyme early on as if he knew I would have problems with gas. And I tell them now when I have problems with gas. He thinks nothing of it.

Just had to get this out of my system. Thanks.
Diagnosed with left sided UC in sigmoid colon and rectum 1986.
Put on Azulfidine 2 X 3 a day and Rowasa enemas 60mg.
Have been pretty much in remission overall other than a few flares over the past 21 years.
Medicine changed to Asacol 400mg 2 pills X3 times a day. Taken off all meds in 2004.
Diagnosed with acid reflux 2005. Put on Protonix 40mg.
Have been using Canasa 1000mg suppositories nightly since January 2007.
Was put back on Asacol 400mg 2 pills 2X a day in July 2007 maintenance.

Colon cancer, although scary, is slow growing and totally treatable if caught early. It takes 10 years for colon cancer to get to stage 4 and that's 10 years of not being scoped and biopsied. For a UC patient it would be very hard to miss this as we get scopes more frequently. Gas is a symptom of many things. First and foremost is that it is derived from the foods you eat. If your diet is heavy on carbs then you will have more gas. If your gut flora is out of balance, you will have more gas. UC patients often have out of balance flora and increased gas. This is normal.

Hey at wit's end, yes, the prep is never fun -- just be prepared with some good magazines or something to read while you are doing the duty. As for the gas....I have gas all the time. Some of it can get pretty potent, but I just deal with it. I think most UC'ers live with gas...but then my boyfriend doesn't have UC and he has plenty of gas too! Now, here is my theory...you can't worry about what you don't know...right? The what-if's are never a good thing. So, go into this colonoscopy with a clear colon and some positive thinking...chin up, okay? :-)

Let me try to put your mind at ease too.  NO ONE was more frightened than I when I started with symptoms back in 98 when I was 52 yrs old.  I started with a LOT of gas, mucus , diarrhea and then just totally all blood....food just passed right on through...bloody diarrhea and I lost 15 lbs within a month.  Looked up colon cancer on the internet and I was scared ****less, no pun intended.  An extra worry was that my paternal grandmother died from cancer of the rectum when she was 65 and dad had diverticulitis.  My symptoms had gotten so bad that I couldn't wait the three months for my appointment with a GI doctor.  My husband had to take me into the ER in the middle of the night.  I may add that I also had a temperature of 102.  While in the hospital I had my first colonoscopy and there it was discovered I had UC.  Needless to say, I was quite relieved.
Fast forward to the present time.  I receive yearly colonoscopies because I now have had the illness for over ten years.  My doctor ALWAYS has me take that awful prep of Golytely...that gallon jug, as he says the other stuff is too harsh on the colon to people with UC.  However, I was hospitalized last May (only the second time since being diagnosed) and they gave me the citrate in there.  Actually, it isn't bad to take.  Piece of cake compared to the Golytely.
Like Sue explained....don't worry about it being cancer...I highly doubt that it is.  The GI doctors are more on top of our cases than the average person.  God bless and good luck on your scope.  Let us know how you make out.  Stop STRESSING!!!

Thanks everyone for the words to lift me up. I know that this is routine as I've lived with UC since 1986. I have checkups yearly, take my meds like I'm supposed to, always have. I have the required tests done when they want me to, both sigmoidoscopes and the colonoscopy. And whenever I have a flare with rectal bleeding I go to the doctor about it.

I do not eat spicy foods as they trigger things. I have had luckily no bleeding or anything with this. I watch what I eat very closely. I noticed there is one food that I eat that really bloats me up and that is alfredo sauce that is used in chicken fetuccine alfredo. Really rich I guess.

I guess the going to the bathroom so much in so few hours is due to having consumed probably more fiber than I need to be, or what my body seems to think is too much. I'm trying to think positive but I've turned into a chronic worrier and very nervous and anxious person.

Hey wit's, maybe you should talk to your doc about how anxious and worried you are about things. He/she might be able to suggest something to help ease those anxious feelings you are having...many people take an anti-anxiety to help ease up those feelings. Take care and let us know how you are doing.

Hey Loneylane, most doctors I go to are hesitant to write me a prescription for any anti-anxiety medicine and I know why. They are afraid I will get addicted to it. That has never been an issue with me. Now all of a sudden I am seeing bright red blood upon using the bathroom. Great time to have this come up 4 days before a colonscopy. Hope they won't want me to reschedule Friday's procedure due to the rectal bleeding. Does anyone know if they can still do the procedure with that all of a sudden going on? At least they can see any inflammation during the procedure. I don't want to have to reschedule this because I have to have someone drive me and they have to have at least a week or week and a half notice to put in for that time off from work.

The reason I had the last three tests was because of ongoing rectal bleeding - no cancellations.  Doctor wants to see what is going on in there for sure.

I take Xanax and could not face everything without it and I am not worried about becoming addicted at age 68.  I never take more than recommended.

Yes, they will absolutely continue with the scope no matter what your symptoms are.  I don't understand why all your doctors would be hesitant to write you a scrip of an anti-anxiety?  It's very common for UC patients to take anti-anxiety medication.  I think you need to delve more into this with your GI and get a better answer.

Yes, when I ask my GI about anti-anxiety help he referred me to my primary care doc.  After I called a couple times to cancel a test or appointment because of anxiety, etc. - almost panic attack once - the doctor finally prescribed me some very good help.

The anthesia service called me last night asking questions about my health. What meds I take that are prescription, if I have any problems with my heart, ever had a stroke, kidneys, liver, diabetes, thyroid, etc. They then asked if I had arthritis, problems with back pain, knee pain, etc. What would back pain have to do with a colonoscopy and anesthesia? Thanks.

That was for pre-registration.  They note all the info for your procedure.  In my case, I have arthritis and need pillows under my knees on the exam table, etc.  My husband has a bad back so they are prepared to help him more move around.  Just so they are aware of any problems you might have with breathing or ?

I was prescribed Zoloft in early December for post partum depression/anxiety after my son was born in October. My first flare (although I didn't know I had UC until last week) started in November. Anyway, I can't imagine how I'd be feeling right now if I weren't on Zoloft.

about to leave for my colonoscopy. Did not have a good nights sleep. I managed the first bottle of magnesium citrate ok followed by licking on a popsicle. But the second bottle I managed to get 3/4 down and then vomited some of it up. I did manage to sleep around 6 hours despite waking twice in the night to go poop. Still going this morning, 3 times since 6:15. Hope I can make it in the car over there without anything happening. Wish me luck.

I hope you'll find the procedure is easy (the prep is worst). During my last one I was shown the photos right away, as soon as I was awake enough to look. It was interesting, although I was disappointed because I thought I was in remission and I really still had a lot of inflammation in the ascending.

Hey, you're probably done by now! Let us know.

Just a note that I have never seen the pictures or want to.  I take the docs word for it and he is not descriptive - thank goodness.  I have seen pictures on the internet of others - enough for me!

Hope all went well.

Hey guys, I was out of the doctor's office by 9:25. And unfortunately the laxative is still running through me, and it is 3:17 in the afternoon here where I live. We are asleep during the procedure and are not shown any pictures of course. But the doctor comes in and tells us what he has found before we leave. And just as expected, he found the rectal inflammation, was asked by him this morning if I was having any problems and I told when things seemed to flare up, and how.

And he unfortunately found another small area of inflammation just above the sigmoid colon that is not reachable by the enemas, I'm thinking this may be the same area that was present 3 years ago that the lab stated looked like aspirin damage, but I don't know. Because 3 years ago he mentioned nothing about any area being inflamed. He took about 8 biopsy samples to send to the lab, I asked him if it appeared that it might be anything other than inflammation, he said no. I will know in a week about the biopsies. He did not put me back on any enemas yet for the rectal inflammation. I am very sore from all the bathroom trips, and now my entire colon and rear is even sorer from the colonoscopy but I'll get over it.

I'm so glad that is over with. I did mention to him when I have these spells of multiple bathroom trips that I have bad cramps or spasms. I asked him if he could write me a prescription for Levsin to use when I have these spasms as they are painful. He said, you are not on any now? I told him I had not been on any since around the late 80's, but it was the early 90's. So I can get that filled and use it only when needed.

I guess we will discuss whether I should increase my asacol or change to something else when I go back the end of this month for a followup. Just thought everyone would want to hear.

Glad to hear your done with the colonoscopy and back home resting. Maybe you've already tried this, but the wet wipes are good for soothing the pain from too many toilet trips. Good he gave you some meds for the spasms.

I have to take my prescription to the drug store and I will pick up some wet wipes. I am sure you are talking about the ones for hemorrhoids. My husband thought it might be hemorrhoids, but the doctor would have mentioned so. If they know a place in your colon is inflammation, why do they still biopsy it? Is it so they can see what kind of inflammation it is??? With my colonoscopy 3 years ago I had a spot of inflammation, the lab stated it looked like inflammation from aspirin use, which I do not use. But at one point I did take a daily baby aspirin to keep my blood thin but don't know whether it was during that time period or not. I do not remember.
