So, I've decreased my prednisone to 15 from 20mg...and have felt/seen some pretty bad changes.  However, I am also 'starting' this week, and it seems that each month I do get worse the week before.  So, yesterday I was in so much pain it brought me to tears, and I refuse to go back up on the prednisone b/c the end is almost here and I've worked hard to get down from the 40mg.
Well, my husband brought me 2 vicadin (sp...sorry!) and I slept all night!  I did!!!!  Then this morning I was sick a little, but nothing like yesterday!  So...I'm just going to take one in the morning and one in the evening to get me through till Thursday afternoon b/c that's when my prep starts and then Friday is the big day!
I just wanted to share my little narcotic story...I am amazed that I slept all night...well, till 4:15am...that's good enough for me!

I see your surgery is later this week. Good luck and we'll be thinking about you. Hopefully things will get better.

Yes, vicodin can slow your bowel down so it's no wonder you were able to sleep all night. Good luck on your surgery and I hope all goes well.

My daughter's first fun drug experience(hospital and mom supervised) was with Morphine. It was a temp. cure for UC, as it too slows the bowel down. Not a long term option, unfortunately!
Good luck with the surgery. We will be rooting for you.
Daughter,15 diagnosed 1-08 w/ UC .
Asacol, Prevacid, Flagyl, Prednisone 50mg, major flare, now off!, Hosp. four x this yr. Low residue diet still, an
6MP, Colazal ,horrible acne/moon for awhile- No more Pred, but 6mp isn't working. Cortifoam enemas 4xweek
Trying probiotics, Niferex, fish oil, and Mangosteen for kicks.
Had 4th infusion of Remicade(12-08), and still on all of the other drugs, except Flagyl and Pred. Better, no remission. In a drug trial for children. Living on a flare's edge.

I figured my good experience was b/c of the slowing of the bowels...my poor tummy needed a break...anything that goes through me is just excrutiating.

In fact, after my last hospital stay I was on pain killers for quite some time b/c of my open wounds, and I was also furthering in my Remicade treatments...so when I was seeing a positive change in my frequency my husband commented that he didn't want me to get my hopes up too high in case it was the pain killers doing the trick. He was right. : )

So, for my short term need I will keep up with the vicodin and hope for the best!

Thanks for you thoughts and wishes!!! Friday is going to be the start of my disease free life!!!!!

Good luck On the 6th with your surgery. I hope everything turns out great for you it sounds like you have suffered so much.  I will be having my second Remicade infusion on that day I hope it works nothing else has. I will be sending good thoughts your way.

Just note that vicodin, being a narcotic, also slows down digestion. It might make your prep all the worse if you're backed up because of the vicodin!

dx proctitis in 1987
dx UC in 1991, was stable until 1998

1998 started prednisone, asacol, pentasa, nortriptylene, ativan, 6MP, rowasa enemas and suppositories, hydrocortisone enemas, tried the SCD diet, being a vegetarian, omega 3s, flax, pranic healing, yoga, acupuncture, probiotics

2000 lost all my B-12 stores and became anemic

2001 opted for j-pouch surgery- now living life med-free

Robin please let us know how every thing goes in the next week or so.  I feel for you being a mom of a little one trying to deal with this flare up.  I remember it all too well.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.  I'm glad you got some sleep.

I hope you have some help with your little one.  I was diagnosed in 1994 and had one flare up in 2001.  I have had three in the past 9 months and this last checkup revealed "pancolitis" and it use to be left-sided.

I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
