Today is the begining of my 10th day on pred taking 4 50mg pills a day. After my first flare starting a month ago my gi decided to put me on the pred since the asacol stopped working. Does it take more than 10 days for a flare to get better? Yesterday was a good day for me. I felt really good and had a nice day, the days before that were a lot of D & small amounts of blood almost every day. This morning was horrible. I was on the toilet 3 times for about 10-20 minutes each with mostly liquid D along with blood & mucus. My diet is pretty strict so I'm thinking food doesn't matter. Any input is greatly appreciated. I'm going to the gi monday but hopefully I don't have to go to the er before that : (

Typically one responds to pred quicker than that but I was on pred for over 2 years and I wouldn't ever say that my flare was totally controlled.  I always had bleeding and I always had more frequency.  The difference was that I felt better on pred and could go to work.   Are you sure about your dosage?  4ea 50mg pills sounds like a lot of pred!!

actually I think it's 10mg a pill. going from 4 to 3 to 2 to 1 to 1/2 all for 10 days each. I've lost a lot of weight too. about 20 lbs in a month.

40mgs of pred per day is actually kind of a low dose for an acute flare- I always started at 60mgs, then weaned down. Which took FOREVER, mind you. But anything lower than 60mgs just didn't give me any relief- once I did start at 40mgs, to see if it would help, & nothing- I wound up bumping the dose up to 60mgs after all, thereby stretching out the duration of the whole course! My GI is one of those "hit it heavy" with pred types. You may mention bumping it up to your GI. Stinks, but.... if you're already on it, what'd the diff?

diagnosed with UC '02
meds-
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade-10mgs/kg- since 4/07
Imuran- 150mgs/day
Culturelle
Fiber supplement

It took about a month to end this latest flare up on 40mg of Pred a day. In the past it's taken 1-2 weeks. I haven't gone over 40mg a day to start with, just took a little longer this time, but the Pred finally did get the flare up stopped. That in combination with the Asacol and Rowasa.

I was always on pred in combo with something too. Like asacol. But I usually respond to it in just a couple of days. 5 at most. I responded like suebear. better, but not 100%.

Yeah, I also think you may be tapering when you should not until you improve..and maybe take more if you don't improve. It's crazy to schedule a taper until you know how you respond, I'm surprised some GIs do that. That's what you do for poison ivy, but not a chronic disease that's flaring.

I'm not clear how much you are on now, 10th day and 50th day? Still at total 40 mg, or have you tapered down already?? If it were me, I would go back to the highest dose...but I have many years experience and pretty much always decide my needed dose.

Not sure how the doctors decide on amount of prednisone and the taper.  I know my doctor is conservative because I respond unfavorably to ALL medication.  I started this morning on 40 mg (for a week) 30 mg. for a week and then 20 mg. for two weeks and call if not improving in a couple weeks.  He said ONLY prednisone for now as I can't tolerate any of the enemas (and no mesalamines at all) except Proctofoam.  He said he might add 6MP later and then taper me off prednisone.  I have proctosigmoiditis about 30 cm but mostly in rectum.

Hope you get better.  I know if I get worse I will call in a few days or week - hoping that is not the case.
