So I have been sick for weeks with a Sinus Infection. I went to the doctor and got the z-pack antibiotics. I still felt sick a week later so I though it was viral but after a week of misery at work and home I went to urgent care (yesterday) the doctor said that the z-pack antibiotic had not been strong enough. So she put me on Augmentin which after my second dose this morning I have had two accidents. My tummy is so upset. I have been downing the probitics Nateran (brand name) and activia sad I have heard some of you talk about using a fiber supplement for diahreha (sp?) How does that work. I guess I thought it would make it worse. Also any advice on what I can do to help myself. I am going on rice, boiled chicken, soy sauce diet for a while, I going to go pick up some VSL#3 tomorrow.

I can't take augmentin either.  My last sinus infection, I had it real bad. I waited b/c I didn't want to be on the antibiotics. My GI doc told me that a sinus infection that gets out of control is worse than anything UC can do.  I was put on LEVAQUIN  500MG twice a day for 3 weeks.  It really didn't effect me at all. I watched my foods. No dairy and no ruffage while taking it. Also NO probiotics while taking it.

When taking a antibiotic it greatly lowers the effectiveness  of the probiotic. And if you are taking VSL#3 which is expensive why waste money.

Some probiotics aren't killed off by antibiotics. One brand I know for sure that is okay to take with antibios is Florastor, which is a yeast and not a bacteria. VSL#3 state on their website that taking it with antis greatly reduces the effectiveness. It would be a good idea to wait a couple of hours between taking the antis and the probiotics, but even then you'll probably want to double up. I'm not sure about the augmentin, but I know the z-pack is time release. so even after your last dose, it continues to kill bacteria for a few more days.

I hope you feel better soon. I just got over a sinus infection myself, and luckily it was helped with a z-pack. It was rough on my insides though.

I simply refuse Augmentin, Amoxicillin and all closely related drugs. They gave me D before I had UC. I've found I can usually negotiate with my doctors for a less troublesome antibiotic. If possible, I try to get them to prescribe a zithromycin Z-pack.

Regarding probiotics, take them at least two hours after the antibiotics and four hours before the next dose. The abx will kill some of them off, but you'll still get a lot of benefit.
