with in a week of surgery he was in agony, his whole body went into septis shock and his bowl twisted at the link of the bag. The surgeons said we were lucky that we called an ambulance when we did otherwise he would have not made it. he also said that he had never seen such a seveir case let alone the complications that had intruded.  Charlie (my little brother is 14 and has specail needs) is not coping well. he is currently in hospital and has been for 3 months. someone post back please i need someone to reassure me...xx mad

Aww honey I am so sorry to hear about what your brother is going thru. It's never easy to see someone we love go thru difficulties. We only have a handful of people that have had the surgery here on the Uc forum. Many of us still have our colons. If you don't get many replies here, maybe you should post on our Ostomy forum. I truly wish the best for your brother and you. Hang in there.

Hi Please do not loose heart. Don't worry. The difficult period would pass and your brother would be fine very soon. Our Prayers are always with your brother. Well I have myself faced this situation, or rather 100 times worst than this. I was operated on November 9, 2005 after all medications failed and a J Pouch was created. It was a two stage surgery. Can you believe from November 9, 2005 till December 3, I was in hospital undergoing all sorts of complications, right from ileo getting choked, my respiratory canal getting choked, blocakages and what not. After discharge from the hospital, I was reporting to hospital for dressing everyday from Dec 3, 2005 till March 5, 2006. In between I had all sorts of complications, but I never lost hope. The incision would not heal and the tissues did not form. My abdomen burst and remained open throughout this period, plus the pouch (outer) would fall because of all sorts of skin allergies. I was only on liquid diet.

Finally I was operated for second stage - takedown or closure of ileum and start of J pouch on 13th March 2006. I thought my pain and agony is over. However, I faced the worst. After discharge from hospital on 19th March, 2006, within a day or two, my intestines/abdominal wall burst open from the closure site. and the faeces started flowing out from abdominal wall instead of anal opening. Anyway I did not loose hope and I had good wishes from friends like you. The doctors ripped open the stiches and fixed a pouch again so that the muck does not land inside the abdomin. This again lasted for quite some time.
But believe me you, God is great and this problem also passed and the wound healed and closed on its own. So have faith, be positive, I am sure your son would be fine. Since this surgery is a major one, there are ups and down in this surgery and particularly because of his tender age. He needs your support and if you loose strength than who is going to give him support.
Always keep in mind that "Problems in the world would go on increasing, one should become stronger to deal with them.
"If by chance, one becomes sick and patient, one thing he should not loose is patience.
Cheers. Things would be fine. We will pray for his speedy recovery.
In case you need any further clarification on this issue, feel free to get back.
Be positive. HE will be all right. Why do you feel you are alone. We all are here on this forum to lend shoulder to each other. It is a big family.

Another thing. I too had faced this twisting of ileo and had to be rushed to hospital. The Stoma Clinic ET took care of me and said there is nothing to worry. She pulled out - sucked the food particle, which were stuck inside. Nothing to worry at all. These things do happen in this surgery. Quite common thing.

Lily,

I'm so sorry your brother had to go through this surgery and the complications that followed.

I had  a colectomy in 2007 and had some short-term complications, but not as bad as your brother.  There was a temporary blockage that cleared up on its own and I was released from the hospital 2 weeks after surgery.  It's been 17 months since my surgery and I'm doing fine now.  I hope and pray that your little brother continues to improve and should get better over time.

My heart hurts for you and your family. Try to do your part for your parents. I am sure they are worried a lot. Speak to your friends or grandparents or other trusted relatives, as you too have needs. Let the pain out. Good thinking to reach out here, as this site has folks who know some of the pain felt for loved ones with this disease. The other forum might have more detail on his surgery, but it sounds like you have plenty of data, and could use message of hope.
We all have to decide, every day, to make the day count. Keep looking here for information. There are many success stories, though our group tends to be the tough cases(or we wouldn't need each other so much). I m hopeful that your brother has good doctors that are doing their best. Hang in there and stay well yourself.
