Prednisone taper - when do you start 6MP??

I researched and found lots of great (and maybe not so great) info on prednisone and 6MP for maintenance.
After exhausting all the other better-for-you medications, I am now on prednisone - 40 mg. one week, then 30 and 20 - then call doctor.  He mentioned 6MP to maintain remission (should I ever get there).  At what point woudl that be added?  I am day 4 on prednisone, feeling good, symptoms certainly better, etc.  Affecting my vision the most since I have starting of cataracts and corneal transplants - hope that improves!
Would suppositories be good?  I have mostly rectal symptoms, etc.  I have used Canasa, Rowasa, and hydrocortisone.  Could not tolerate!
 
Please any info would be appreciated!

New diagnosed with proctosigmoiditis - 6/2008
 Colonoscopy 10/28 showed only few cm. left to heal in rectum - tried Proctofoam for weeks - no luck.
Probiotic Align, Prilosec for GERD
Inderol for hypertension,Xanax,Lipitor, multivitamin, calcium w/D, Tylenol
Tried hydrocortisone for two weeks with no change.
2/3/2009 - sigmoidoscopy showed about 30 cm. involved but mild - starting on prednisone only 40 mg. taper on 2/7/2009.

It depends on the doctor when they want to start you on 6mp. Typically though, they start you on 6mp at the same time as pred or when you do a slow taper from a steroid dependancy. 6mp takes a long time to build up in your system - 3months to a year. Have you tried hydrocortisone suppositories in the past?

No - just the hydrocortisone enemas and they made the bleeding and pain a LOT worse in 12 days.  The doc left my prescription directions as 20 mg. for two weeks after one week each of 40 and 30 - then call.   Maybe that is when he will consider the 6MP.  He is very hesitant to put me on anything more - stronger - because of my reaction to all mesalamine medications AND the fact thatheconsiders my case "mild to moderate" with only mild up colonfrom scope.If I could take mesalamine medications I would be in remission now - I know it.  They started to help and then I got very sick from side effects.

YES - doing great on prednisone.  Last two days no blood (or I couldn't see any - that is what counts), formed stools, 3 a day but ok.  Little gas with cramping but so much better.  Joints feels so good (my arthritis and bad knees), more energy but not too much.  I have been sleeping ok (don't do that good anyway). My eye surgeon told me I had starting of cataracts a month ago and I do believe my vision is getting little worse - keeping an eye (no pun intended) on that one.  I think I should be drinking more water (I hate it) and seems I have gained a lb. or so which I don't need but a trade off for now.  I have two more days of 40 mg. and then down to 30 mg. for a week.
