Hi All,
I am now on 75mgs of 6MP and tapering my prednisone (currently at 20mgs). Since being released from the hospital I have lost 14 pounds. I have no desire to eat. Is this typical of 6MP? Ususally I blow up like a balloon from the prednisone?

I am so much better than I was when I was admitted 3 weeks ago but I still have some blood. I would of thought though there would be no blood since I am on prednisone. I need to get off the drug asap as I am having terrible side effects. And if I am still having blood...what is the point to taking it. I know it can take up to 3 months for the 6MP to help.

Any advice?

Hi,

Lack of appetite is a symptom listed on my rx sheet for 6mp and you just upped your doseage so it could be a factor in your lack of desire for food.

Any reason why you stopped the rectal medication which might help with the lingering blood problem.  Also as you know that 6mp takes a long time to kick in so it may not be helping at all at this point.  Additionally, seems like a lot of people get kind of backlash batch of bleeding and symptoms when they lower their pred.  Are you bleeding a lot or is it just visible traces.  Could you be amemic which could hurt your appetite and should of course be treated right away.

I have blood just about every day for several months at a time and yes, it sucks, but if it was me I would rather have some blood while I waited for the 6mp to kick in than be on a drug which is giving you terrible side effects.

In the past when I have gone without eating well due to illness, instead of feeling deprived and hungry when I am getting better, I still feel like not eating.  I'm not sure if that applies to you, but if so, you may want to go on a kind of anti-diet to see if you can restart your hunger response.  I don't mean to eat a huge amounts of junk food, but just make a food plan for yourself that has you eating regularly and often rather than waiting to actually be hungry to eat.  You have to eat to be hungry - goes the old saying.

Feel better soon.

Wishful - what terrible side effects from prednisone have you had and did they start right away.  I am on day 4 of 40 mg.  Doc is considering 6MP so I now have questions!  I would so wish for no appetite as I am about 80 lbs. overweight. Can either of you compare steroid suppositories to the hydrocortisone enemas (which made me much worse).

Weight loss is a potential side effect of 6mp- I, however, have not experienced it. I have been on 6mp for almost three months and it still hasn't started working. I am also taking 20 mg of pred.

THere are many people who get relief from 6mp; bad part is that it takes a while to start working. If you are underweight, you may have to make a concerted effort to eat.

Elaine- I am also overweight and I was hoping the 6mp would take away my appetite--- but no luck so far.

Thanks Jackie - usually works that way for us who are overweight, huh?

Hope the 6MP works for you.  What are your symptoms now - better?

My symptoms have not improved at all. I am at my wit's end. I am starting VSL #3. I just ordered it a couple of days ago. Pred is not working, 6mp is not working... Trying to avoid surgery.

I tell my doctor I must be one of the very few "fat" UC patients..... :))

Elaine...remember I was hospitalized on IV steriods so they released me on 60mgs of prednisone. I was a mess. I couldn't sleep, I was running around the house cleaning, my heart was racing, etc. Then when I dropped my dose of prednisone my joints would hurt. I am extremely emotional and depressed and kinda withdrawn.

I am going to go back to rowasa nightly. I refuse to pump anymore steriods into my body! I hate it so much. I had been doing rectal meds for a year straight in 08 after my first major flare with asacol, with a hospital stay, and prednisone and I never really STOPPED bleeding. I never got better.  Thats what made me go on 6MP. I did not have a choice. I was hospitalized twice in less than a year. I also was steriod dependent.

I am glad to hear others are experiencing lack of appetite. The good thing is ...I can totally stand to lose the weight. I was at least 25 pounds over weight. I have since lost about 14 pounds...so I am truly not complaining. I was just surprised because the prednisone usually makes me pig out.

I guess I would rather have the blood too....I am not having a lot...but then again I always had blood so I am kinda immune to it. I am going to my GI on Friday for more blood tests and she is going to drop me to 10mgs of prednisone. I just want OFF THE DRUG!

Oh I really understand wanting off the drugs - that is the way I felt with each mesalamine medication I tried - they made me soooo sick - like a bad flu.  So far happy with the prednisone - who knows what the future holds - seems we are all so different.  I have a BIG appetite anyway and gain very easily so I don't really see any change.  I remember my husband was on steroids and wanted to eat every minute.  I do not feel that bad - yet! Another thing is the lack of urgency and rectal pain - much less.

I love the way my joints feel but I have had arthritis for 35 years so going back to that pain would just be "normal" for me I guess.  I can only take Tylenol for pain so bad sometimes.

We will see - one day at a time and good luck to you!!

Hugs, ElaineNY

I just started both the 6mp and cortfoam this week.  I hope the cortfoam kicks the rowasa up a notch.  At this point, I am not looking for perfection, I just want better quality of life.

With 6mp, I guess its a long wait as it doesn't have any effect until white blood cells settle into low numbers.  Since it does take a while to work, you might want to consider starting the 6mp sooner rather than later.  Also, I was given a dose based on my weight and after five days I have no side effects whatsoever.  I do take it at night even though the instructions say morning.  I do this because after reading here, in the archives, that tiredness and nausea are common side effects.

Thank you madabs.  This is fifth day with prednisone and I am pleased with results so far.  Feeling much better - So far today I have not seen any blood - one normal bm with little cramping but nothing after.  I will know more by noon or so.

I am to call my doc's NP after two weeks - I may call sooner.  I know the doctor is waiting to see how I respond before going to anything else.  You are lucky to tolerate the Asacol because I can't take any mesalamines and that limits the drugs I can take for maintenance should I get into remission with  prednisone.

Continuing good luck to you and hope you feel better each day!
