Hi all, I'm new to this forum and I want to ask about smoking. I've heard that it's helpful for colitis, but when I have a smoke, I can feel bloating. I don't smoke more than two or three cigs a day, but I 'd be curious to hear others experience with smoking and colitis.

Do any of you find that it actually makes your symptoms worse?

Sometimes it can rumble stuff up in my stomach and I will have to go. Don't do it, not worth the other stuff smoking causes.

I say do it, if a bit of smoking brings relief.

23 years of UC which started after quitting smoking. In and out of flares which are usually triggered by antibiotics. Latest issue is endless diarrhea without blood or mucous.

  • Culturelle probiotic
  • Cortenema

I don't smoke... but I do use smokeless tobacco. Copenhagen. And my Gi told me now was the WRONG time to quit. He recomended that I quit at some point in the future, but now was not the time. He said one of the treatments accepted for UC was a niccotene patch. He wouldn't do that for me because with my tobacco use my body was already getting all the nicotene it could handle. But he didn't recomend takin the nicoten away and adding the stress at this point. He suggested we waited till I had been in remission for a while..... then we could concentrate on quittting. He was not advocating tobacco use.... just that when in a flare.... it was the wrong time to try and quit.

It's actually the carbon monoxide in the nicotine that aids with inflammation in the colon, researchers that discovered this are apparently working on a med that will mimic this...but like everything, what works for some doesn't work for all.

You may notice bloating from smoking because of the air you're sucking in, just like eating too quickly increases the air you take in and as a result can cause bloating and gas.

I smoked on and off for years up until about two months after I was diagnosed. Smoking often brought on the immediate urgency to go to the bathroom. I believe I would be totally miserable now if I smoke.

Culturelle Probiotic - prilosec - metamucil capsules

That's how I usually feel, but how many fixes do I have to cut? I like my evening cigarette.

I hate to say it but, smoking actually made my bowels settle.  I quit smoking on August 10 2008, and 2 weeks later began a flare that I am still working through (I am finally off the prednisone and on only Asacol and rowasa).  This has been my longest and worst flare in the 14 + years of having UC.  But, I am still glad I quit :)

  • Diagnosed in 1994 at the age of 14
  • Initally prescribed prednisone and Rowasa enemas - near immediate improvement (Yay!).  Within 1 - 2 months later, prescribed only Sulfasalazine - Yikes! Severe allergic reaction!  1 week in hosptial with 4 blood transfusions.  Then prescribed Asacol - Phew! Very few problems/flares on Asacol for years.
  • Mid 2008 - tried Lialda - NO!!!  Caused flare, pills too big to swallow anyway!
  • Back to Asacol - 400 mg tablets, 3 pills, 3 times per day, and a daily multivitamin
  • August 2008 - quit smoking (Yay!), caused (?) major flare two weeks later.  Prescribed rowasa enemas, no improvment.
  • September 2008 - prescribed predisone (40 mgs), improvment in all aspects except, stools not solid.
  • November 2008 - Tapered down to 10 mgs Predinisone, 9 400 mg Asacol tablets daily, 1 multivitamin, 1 caltrate/vitamin D tablet.  About to call doctor to see what next step is - possibly remicade

Smoking used to make my symptoms better and when my stomach was bothering me I would find some relief just from smoking, but now most of the time I can't make it through half a cigarette without having immediate urgency.
