Hi all,
Question... I have been on and off pred for years.  Every time I come off of pred. I have what I call a "rebound" effect with my asthma (ie. I start having difficulty with my breathing and have to start more meds for the asthma).  Then I break out with zits.  The last couple of times coming off of pred. I have noticed my emotions being exceptionally wacky.  While I am on it, I am generally ok, but when I come off of it completely, I get "angry" for about a week.  Has anyone else had this experience when they come off of pred?
Thanks
Chris

The only withdrawl symptoms I seem to be noticing as I'm tapering off ( was on 40mg for months... now tapering... and down to 15 mg )
#1. in the beginning I lost weight like crazy on pred and had NO hunger. As I taper I find I am starved... I originally lost 41 pounds. Have now put back on ten, but with the bloating, moon face, and water retention.... those 10 look like 50. And I'm starved all the time. I now fight now to overeat.

#2. Everytime Doc lowers my dose the next level, I go through 2-3 "bad" days. my Bm's go back up to 4-6 times. After I get through that it goes back down to 1-2 times. Till he lowers the dose again.. I think its just my body re-adjusting.

yes pred can whack out your emotions on all different levels of it. even once you are off pred it can take months to get back to normal. especially if you have been on it for a long time..or been on and of it for a long time. get some adrenal/electrolyte levels checked and see how they are looking.

Hi Chris,

I was shocked when I read your posting, because I could totally identify with it!!! I quit Pred around 2 months ago and as you, I totally broke out in zits (on my face) that resembles acne. I first blamed 6-MP for doing it, but I still take 6-MP and my facial skin has improved. Also, I was already taking 6-MP for a while when I quit Pred and then the zits came. Also, my emotions are totally out of whack. I am in little trouble now and stressed (hubby got laid off, we had tornadoes yesterday, just recovering from a huge flare...), but since quitting Pred, i have daily crying fits and hissy fits. I haven't gained weight on Pred, but afterwards like a ton! I got leftovers from a moonface, but my buffalo hump is gone. Fun stuff!

So, to make a long story short: I have the same symptoms as you and experience the same.

Don't worry. These are withdrawl symptoms. I too used to suffer. There are mood swings. One feels like crying and what not. In so far as asthma is concerned, the steroids being immunosuppresants normally control the asthma, while you are having them. But once you are off or tapering then they aggravate the condition. That is why you would have noticed most of the asthma inhalers are steroid based. Acne used to be common for me. Rather I would call them boils on my face and my back.

Yes another thing. I too used to get very angry. Temperaments go for a six with steroids.
