I bought a bottle of MetaMucil Fibre Capsules 160 count. I heard that psyllium fibre would bulk up my stool and slow my digestion so as to help form my stools. After reading the bottle I'm a little afraid to try them. It says I should drink at least 8 ounces of water or I may choke shakehead Also, it says to take 5 at a time up to 3 times a day. It's also described as a laxative which I really don't need. I feel as though it might trigger an explosion...

Is this the right product, and can anyone recommend a starter dose?

I take 3 caps 3 times a day. Start off with a lower dose so you don't get bloated. It definitely helps bulk up my stools and helps with urgency as well(it has never had a laxative effect on me). I've never had a problem taking the pills. Just make sure to drink a lot after you take them. I mentioned that I take them to my GI today at my appt. and he said it was fine. Give it a couple days and I think you will see a difference. Good luck!

I started to take them in the beginning, back when I was dx with spastic colon. At that point my GI recomended I quit them and switch to benefiber powder. He felt that was a better option. After that didn't work and I had had a colonoscopy. I was dx with UC. He then recomended i quit all fiber supplements. Of course by then he had a food diary to work with and he said I was getting enough natural fiber in my diet.
But back to your question... only once did I feel like I was going to "choke". And it was a time I was in a hurry and didn;t drink alot of water with them. I normally drink almost a gallon of water a day. I know this because i keep a gallon jug in the fridge and have to fill it everynight. But that time I didn;t and I felt ........ maybe the word is constriction?.. Either way... make sure you drink alot of water. Least thats my experience.

Start with the least amount and build up slowly (once your system has adjusted) and only if necessary, it may very well be that only one/day will be all you need....expect increased gas/bloating, this is normal, just your system adjusting...the reason you need to drink plenty of water with it is to get it down so it doesn't swell in your esophagus or anything (don't be afraid) as far as the laxative part, it's mild, it won't cause or increase D, it's just to ensure that you don't get constipated (especially for those that take up to 5 three times/day.

My GI was the one that told me to take fibre supplements daily and indefinitely, it's been about 4 yrs now and it's been well worth it, I've never increased from my initial dosage, I do fine with one/day just before bed with lots of water works out well enough for me. It took my system 3 months to adjust then all my bloating was gone and only very little gas is all I get so that alone made it well worth it since I was kinda bloated and super gassy before taking it, it's also aided with my mucus, frequency, nice formed stools for the most part and I can tolerate eating fibreous foods without getting all gassy and bloated.

Definitely worth it, but stick with it daily, taking it daily means your system will adjust that much quicker and it does vary from person to person just stick with it.

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)
