Not a great topic, I know, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the following:

My doctor wants me to focus on using the Rowasa enemas at night, every night, for 3 months, as I continue to have flares about once a month.  When I use the enemas, it only takes about 2 days before I seem to break out with horrible hemmoroids (right now in fact).  If I don't use the enemas, I don't have this problem, or at least not as bad.  I'm using Preparation H, but it still is horrible.  Needless to say, using the enema is the last thing I want to do, so I'm caught in a catch-22.  Any ideas/suggestions/thoughts??

Thanks.

interesting....but you could be sensitive to something in the medication.
How long have you been on them nightly?

Are you meaning internal or external hemmie?

The longest I've been able to manage with them is about a week and then I have to stop. They seem to be external. I know I have some on the inside as well, but it's just the outside that hurts. Terrible itching and burning to the point I have to take Tylenol.

I never considered that it could be the medication itself. I just assumed it was irritation from the UC and the enema.

Are you being a little rough with the insertion tip?  Sometimes it helps to lube up the tip with extra vaseline or something (or lube yourself up - gross but it works) and it will slide in easier.  Then you hopefully shouldn't have the hemmie problem.

I did not have hemmies but ALL the enemas - tried Rowasa and hydrocortisone - both for a couple of weeks - increased swelling down there and pain - had to use cortisone cream, etc.  Discomfort stopped when I stopped the enemas.  I cannot use any mesalamine medications but thought the steroid enemas would be good.  No such luck.  The rectal meds - including Canasa has helped to a small degree with bleeding and pain BUT then I got reactions that were worse - I assume from the medication.

Hi...you should then possibly get a prescription for Proctocedyl...it'll help heal the hemmies, and then hopefully, you will be able to use the enemas.

You could also have a yeast infection? possibly trying an antifungalointment on that area will help.

Has your doctor taken a look-see to help determine what's going on?

Thanks for all the great feedback. I'll talk to my doctor about the Proctocedyl. Has anyone had any success with Analpram? I seem to be very sensitive in that area in general, so I'm always very careful about inserting the enemas. The doctor even gave me some KY Jelly to use for additional lubricant, but I really don't think that's the problem.

Yes, I believe that is what mine is - mine is generic with 2% hydrocortisone  - GYN nurse prescribed it first for itching and redness = works!
