My natropath told me to get off my enemas and the tonic he was giving me . I am off all his meds however just started drinking slipery elm 2 times a day. Before while using my enemas only when i needed to used to help me staight away with allowing me to go to the bath room however now i have it takes 3-4 days of using my enemas to help me at all. I am still waiting to see my specialist for the first time next month. I haven't gone to the bath room for over 3 days, this happends sometimes and dont know why so my sis gave me 2 laxative pills which was a bad mistake. I woke up every hour past 4am in cronic stomach and sharp stabbing pains. I did go to the bathroom but at the same time it was so painful. I sometimes take the chocolate laxative which I find great to use.. I don't have a clue of what it did to me but generaly are laxatives bad for uc?

yes, they're bad for UC in a general sense..it's like taking a clean-out before a c-scope. But, if you use them more often, the colon will get nice and lazy (it likes when it doesn't have to work), and you'll set yourself up for more trouble.

What enemas did the naturopath give you?

Please stop the laxatives....if you are needing to increase or soften the stool (which is more helpful going through an inflamed rectum), use stool softeners (docusate).

Call the BI and see if he/she possibly has a cancellation that you can get in.

Are you eating OK?

Thanks heaps for your advice. I am using salfolk 4mg enamas but my previous specialist prescibed them for me. I dont use the laxative alot prob once a month due to not going to the bathroom for 3 + days. I have changed my diet alot. I used to eat alot of junk but have changed my diet alot. The only thing I am trying is that slippery elm 2 x day. I dont think natropathy is really helping and it is taking FOREVER to see these specialists. I have tried a couple of times to call and get into cancellation but he is meant to be a good doc so I willl wait it out and yes no more laxatives :) Thanku again for your advice.

Try MiraLAX (I think I spelled it correct). I have bed constipation when I'm in flare, so I use it once in two days. It's enough for me, but you can start once a day. My GI told me that it's better then all these stool softeners and laxatives. Good luck.
Diagnosed with left-sided UC on Sept 08 Colazal 5x2day, Lialda 2 per day (so unusual to take just 2 pills)
Canasa 1 supp. every nigh Cortifoam 1 at night
Vitamins: Zinc, B complex, Fleexsead Oil capsules, Multi. Digestive Enzymes (helps a lot)

I use Miralax on occasion too but not often - maybe once every 3 or 4 months. My GI also mentioned that it was the safest to use. But if you can do it without laxatives then that is even better :)

Milk of Magnesia works great too, & is extremely gentle- also came with my GI's recommendation! I don't use it often, but in the past year, I've had constipation more than diarrhea. They both suck!

you'd be better off to start a fibre supplement. I'd firstly suggest Metamucil Smooth...not the sugar-free one, however. OR the Metamucil capsules...

That will help get your colon into a better rhythm.

Oh,,,coffee can help stimulate the movement of the colon...maybe just had in the morning.

Honey is a mild laxative...have it on toast as a snack.

Do you eat fruit, have cooked veggies or maybe salads?
