So this topic may be old news to some but after 4 years of UC I just started hearing about aritificial sweeteners being really bad for UC symptoms. I consume a massive amount of these products because sugar seems to make my UC symptoms worse, and now I don't know what to do. I am in the middle of a long drawn out flare, and have decided not to use prednisone for this one, and I am trying some dietary changes and probiotics instead. Anyone have any advice, are artificial sweeteners really that bad? This just seems so unfair; excess sugar definately makes me worse, so what am I to do? Any input?

I'll only use Stevia or honey....it's also one of the many reasons I quit eating processed foods/beverages.

Stevia is a natural sweetener that comes from a plant.

pb, I read an article where coke is coming out with stevia in some of their drinks, but I guess it isnt FDA approved yet. I figure they have the clout to get it done, and it will end up in almost all drinks in a few years.

Make sure that when (and if) Coke comes out with Stevia, it's not just an added ingredient with other artificial sweeteners...read the label carefully.

In addition, it's a good idea to cut back on all sweets - natural or otherwise. I've had much success with a diet low in sugars and starches. You'll get used to it over time and will enjoy fruits and occasional uses of honey or stevia, etc. and they will seem much sweeter after you've adapted.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, l-glutamine, vitamin D and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free diet. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

I don't know, as far as I'm concerned the carbination in pop (soda) isn't good for the ol' bones anyways and for IBDers that alone is a risk not worth taking, so even if it is approved I won't touch it, besides I don't trust the pop industry, I'm sure they'll put more than Stevia in their product to ruin the whole purpose of it anyways (that's generally how smart those companies are).

Unfortunately I think it boils down to trail and error. I know from a couple of personal experiences that splenda rips my stomach when I'm not even having a flare up.

I take Sweet N Low in my coffee every morning, have for years, and it doesn't seem to bother me.  I also drink an occasional diet coke or pepsi, not every day, about two or three glasses a week.  That doesn't bother me either.  I can eat sweets too, but I don't overdo it.
