I was diagnosed with Left Sided UC.... my question is... is it possible for it to spread and become pancolitis? Also.. can pancolitis cause your right side to hurt like your left side would?

Latest-Went to ER cuz I couldn't eat for 5 days and was having severe flare up after passing two kidney stones after a week of the flu. (long month)
GI is currently trying to taper me off of pred fairly fast in hopes to keep me on Lialda and at a lower dosage of pred. to try mesalamine enemas again. Hope it works...if it doesn't.. I go on Imuran and am on pred longer. *crosses fingers*
Medications:Prednisone 40mg Again! (groan)Lialda 4 a day Antibiotic-Amoxyclln
I am so sick of this disease!

I know some people have started with left sided and over time learned they had pancolitis. I don't know if that's because the flare just didn't fully develop during the diagnosis process, or if the disease actually progressed through the colon.

I had pancolitis and the right side hurt like hell for me, just as the left. It's my understanding that a flare begins at the bottom and works its way through the colon, starting with the left and going to the right. My major issues were the right (toward the entry into the colon) and the center portion by my belling button. Those were the areas that caused the most pain UC wise, and then my hemerroids were extremely painful in the rectum, so I was miserable.

Not everyone feels pain with their UC, but I will be the first to admit that mine was excrutiating and very difficult to tolerate...and with pancolitis it sucked very badly. Saying that I was miserable is an understatment.

I wish you the best with treatments and future remission!

gosh i hope I don't have to get another colonoscopy.

I had one last august.... and they said i had moderate left sided 40cm up.... but i dont think she could go further cuz i was in such a bad flare up. And recently i've been in such a bad flare they put me in the ER and she was talking about possibly another colonoscopy if the pred doesnt help. Well I was on 40mg for a week and tapered to 30mg... I'm supposed to taper tomorrow to 20 but there's no way I can. I have been having AWFUL pain in my right side now too... and once so bad it made me vomit through the night. I still have urgency and while my stool is more formed... there's a lot of it... and the cramping and pain is still there. Food is hurting me still and i'm EXTREMELY bloated and nauseas. I am still in the bathroom a lot. Lots of mucous and still blood mixed in.

I just i dunno.. I have a feeling its spread. I just really hate the idea of ANOTHER colonoscopy.

I know it's scary...and it's my opinion that if you're still bleeding and cramping, I wouldn't taper the prednisone. Though it's not recommended it is not unheard of to stay on it for awhile. At least until you can find a treatment that works. Like I said, I just didn't react to anything and that included Remicade. Nothing worked. We did just stick with the 5asa, Asacol and nothing more b/c my side effects of the prednisone and Remicade were very horrible and my GI was afraid I would suffer more with an additional level of drugs.

Another c-scope would be very beneficial b/c it may give a better perspective of your needs. I had severe pancolitis and when in a full blown flare than affected the entire colon was just horrible. I was gray/green in appearance and just could not function. Please do not allow yours to get that out of control.
