Im really happy to have found this forum .So many people with UC out there , almost feels ''normal'' . I was symptom free for 4 years , now back with a flare . I know I should worry about other things and that it might sound very shallow , but my doc put me on 40 mg prednisone . Im in a long distance relationship and seeing my bf in a month and Im really worried about my appearance and the moonface , Ive had the moonface before but that was on higher doses . When do the puffy cheeks appear and has anyone ever had a problem regarding the moonface and their partners ? How will he react?

Does your bf know that you have UC? If not, I would tell him if I were you. I'm recently diagnosed and most of my coworkers know that I have UC. I find that it's been easy to be very open and honest about it. They way I see it, the more people that know about it, the better it is for those of us who have it.

Anyway, if the moonface does develop, just tell him it's because of the prednisone and that it will go away. If he's an @ss about it, dump him! Anyone who places that much value on (a temporary!) physical appearance isn't worth keeping.

I am newly diagnosed so haven't been on prednisone, but from what I've read on here not everyone gets it.

(it being moonface)

Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

We were newlyweds when I had to go on pred the first time. I looked so bad by November that I sent a picture from our honeymoon in June on our Christmas cards. You have to find a way to laugh about it or you will get depressed. Pred. made me very jittery and unsettled but I recognized that and tried not to bite anyone's head off. Try to stay aware of your emotions and don't let Pred. get the best of you. It isn't moon face forever. If he's not supportive, you don't need to stay with him!

As far as I'm concerned, the moonface is the worst side effect of Prednisone. I know that many of the side effects cause permanent damage to the body and the moonface goes away but it's still humiliating. Don't feel like you're being shallow, it's so hard having this disease and then to have your looks altered too just plain sucks!!

I would left your bf know in advance if the moonface begins before you see him. It seems to me that it starts for me right around the 4-6 week mark of being on Prednisone. My husband is a great liar and always tells me that I look fine, he acts like the moonface doesn't even exist. It's nice of him but I still get super self conscious of it - not so much with him but with everyone else.

You would be surprised how many people honestly don't notice what drives us crazy! For me it isn't noticed except when it's gone, then people ask me if I've lost weight.

Anyway, try self-tanning lotion for the face. It works wonders to slim the face.
Clinique makes a good one, so does Neutrogena.

Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated all wheat/gluten from my diet. Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion), trying Curamin. Doing OK, but still have some bad days.

i'm dealing with the dreaded moon face right now...along with having lost 25 pounds due to this flare. My work puts me in front of a lot of people so i feel pretty self-conscious. It sucks, but what can you do?? i'm just waiting for the taper so i can look "normal" again...

I don't think it's being shallow...it affects our physical apperance...i would talk to you guy though...he'll understand.

Pred makes your face produce more oil, so it helps to wash your face at least three times a day. I would wash my face once in the morning, once at lunch (I'd bring in face wash to work to be able to do this) and then once before bed.

Glamourgirl...I WISH the moonface was the worse side effect of prednisone!  Prednisone raises my blood pressure to dangerous levels and I also developed osteoporosis because of pred.  If moonface was my only side effect I would be grateful.

I feel very lucky - maybe because I am almost 69 - not many problems with prednisone and the side effects worked in my favor.  Oily skin (yikes mine was SOOO dry), arthritis pain inflammation much better, hypertension remains controlled, no moon face (probably not on long enough - face fat anyway), more energy, AND it has my UC under control.  I have a call in what to do now that I am on 20 mg. - doc ask me to call about 4 days into 20 mg. taper from 40 mg.  Not sure what next move will be.  Wish I could just remain this way.  I do have to take my Xanax for anxiety and some mood swings - but HEY - am a senior and have them no matter what.  Good luck to everyone.  You know any of these side effects unless you are unable to live with them are not so important to me as REMISSION!

Tried all mesalamines and enemas, Canasa, etc.  Colonoscopy 10/28 showed only few cm. left to heal -hydrocortisone enemas 12 days - much worse.
2/3/2009 - sigmoidoscopy showed about 30 cm. involved but mild - starting on prednisone only 40 mg. taper on 2/7/2009.
Feb. 21 - down to 20 mg. - no blood, no pain, no bad side effects so far.  Plan on adding 6MP (or?) at lowest possible prednisone dose.
