Hi... I'm new to this forum and UC so bare with me.
I was diagnosed with UC after I quit smoking cold turkey because I became pregnant in 2007.  My GI prescribed melasamine enemas, which were horrible to do as i was 4 months pregnant. They worked, I used it for about 2 months just till I was symptom free, because I didn't want to risk my pregnancy.  I was diagnosed through a flex sigmoidoscopy because they couldn't do a colonoscopy while pregnant.  Anyways, I was symptom free for about 8 months, since the birth of my child. Till the other morning I was awakened in the middle of the night with excrutiating belly pain, diarrhea, vomitting and bloody stools and mucus. This lasted throughout the night and next day.  But now 2 days after that, I'm still having severe stomach pain, slight diarrhea and no blood in my stools.  Is this a UC flare up?  I see my GI on Thursday.  He'll probably want to do a colonoscopy as I never followed up with him after delivering my child because I was symptom free.

Hi..welcome to the forum! I would say that yes, you're flaring based on the fact that you have a diagnosis of UC. There are a few aspects such as hormone fluctuations combined with stress on top of a probably slow simmer of inflammation that has brought you to this point.

It's unfortunate that the doctor didn't suggest you taper the enemas in a fashion to get you to them at least twice a week especially after your baby was born.

I agree you need to have a colonoscopy to have proper biopsies throughout and to make sure there's nothing else going on as well as the exact extent of UC.

Could you possibly be pregnant again?

If you have the enemas, you might consider to start them today anyway.

Keep us posted as to regarding the visit with your GI.

If you can...request oral and the rectal 5ASA (mesalamine) rather than going on pred if he suggests it.
Especially considering it worked so well for you in the past.

Welcome to Healing Well, Belly Ache. You've unfortunately learned the hard way one of the lovely features of UC. It's a disease of remissions, where symptoms go away, and flares, where they come roaring back. The basic medications we take (Mesalamine, Balsalazide, Pentasa, Sulfasalazine) are considered maintenance medications, to be continued even after we go into remission. Some do choose to discontinue them, knowing the UC symptoms will almost certainly return in weeks or years.

Your symptoms do sound like a flare, and hopefully they will be controlled as easily this time as they were the last. If you want to learn more about UC, there are some excellent references in the resource thread at the top of this page. Good luck to you.

In reponse to Quincy: No i can't possibly be pregnant again because i had my tubes tied. Also, I didn't mention to my GI that I discontinued the enemas because I was symptom free, I didn't follow up with him. OOOPPPS! And I am out of the mesalamine enemas, so I'll have to wait till to see my GI. Thank you so much for your response. I look forward to more feed back.

Hi.... I love your member name "Belly Ache"! I think it does sound like a flare. It's a good idea to get the colonoscopy done even if you weren't flaring. You need to know exactly what is going on in there. Good luck!
