I have never used an enema before. I have these pentasa enemas now, and I see that it says that they are supposed to be shoved as deep as possible. Can anyone give me some advice before I go to sleep and use them?

Shake the bottle, have some kleenex at the ready and a bag or waste basket beside your bed so that you don't have to get up afterward.

Lay on your left side (or butt in the air...I've never done that one), both knees crooked in a 7. You may want to add a bit of lubrication (KY or even hydrocortisone cream if you have nothing else, but not vaseline) to the nozzle.

Insert the tip of the nozzle into the anus and push until it's all the way in. . If you have the smooth type of bottle, squeeze until the bottle is squished, then fold over the end (like that of a paper bag) and then fold it over again to get the rest of the med administered.

Squeeze all of the medication in and withdraw the nozzle, cap it, wipe your butt with the kleenex, discard both.

Continue to lay on your left side....and you will probably have the urge to go....this will pass after about 30 seconds...do butt squeezes, grunting, groaning..etc, whatever will help to keep you from running to the bathroom.

If you can keep it in for half an hour and cannot stand the urges if they continue...then that's OK to have a bm.

You'll have to do them nightly for a while...until your flare is over...then taper them to every second night..then eventually every third night..etc.

Hope it's OK...and eventually, you'll work out a system that's more suited for you.

Thanks for the instructions, but I have the Pentasa enemas that are big pills. I used one for the first time yesterday. It was really hard to get in. I could not get it in to deep either. Anyone have advice?

Vaseline isn't water soluble..not suggested.

Regarding the Pentasa NH....you mean you're using the suppositories?

I guess it is a suppository.

My advice is to wet it a bit with hot water...will make it "slippery" and easier to insert.

Insert it into the rectum when you're sitting on the toilet, just past your first knuckle...then squeeze your sphincter...it'll kind of pull it up past the anus. Wipe quickly then stand up.

If you have any gas throughout the day/night, it might leak (pushing some liquified med out with the gas)...at least it does for me, so remember you have it in before you push out the gas.

Keep us posted as to how you're getting along with them.

Hi,
I have just began using pentasa enemas as well a few day ago and have a really hard time inserting the liquid..i feel like i'v been holding the bottle for a really long time(10-15 min)..but hardly any thing goes in when I take it out to see how much went in..How long does it take you guys to inset the enema?..does your hand get tired holding it for a long time? and does the bottle get plugged for you?

How much pressure should be applied to the bottle for proper administration?

I aslo have been using vasaline to coat it.. what is the harm in using vasaline?

Thanks

I had trouble using it too in the beginning. Make sure that you turn the nozzle the right way. After you see that the liquid is moving when you squeeze it, get on your side. Make sure that you do not leave the enemas sitting on their side all day because it seems that the 5-ASA in the bottom can get stuck in the nozzle.

How are the enemas going? I am really frustrated. I thought I saw progress in the beginning, but now it seems that I might be even getting worse.

Butterfly, are you squeezing the enema bottle? You are supposed to squeeze the stuff out of it, it does not automatically go just by holding it.

Vaseline will not dissolve in water inside you so therefore can plug the opening, etc.  If you use it with suppositories it prevents the medicine from dispersing.  Use a water soluble gel like KY or AYR!

Thanks everyone for your advice… then enema actually worked last night. All of it went in. ..it took about 45mins though. I don’t know if that’s the normal time it takes ..how long does it take for you?…What I was doing wrong was that I was squeezing to hard, and the bottle would get plugged…last night I applied very little pressure and it worked very well.=)

I’ve just started using the enemas, so I don’t see its effects just yet, but I will keep you posted on how it turns out=)

How is it making worse for you Nostrahisoria?

Thanks Elaine for the Vaseline advice. I will change to something else.=)

45 minutes...wow.
Did you shake it for a very long time and very vigorously before using it?

I've never had mine plug....maybe you should contact the company and enquire.

I don't use the Pentasa, but do use Salofalk enemas...it takes me about 10 seconds to administer the med.

Well, at first, maybe after 5 days, I think I saw less blood. Now, it is back to the same amount of blood I had before. I am sick of this. I just finished the 12th day of the Pentasa enema. I am just wondering now what the doctor will put me on now. 6mp? Humira? Remicade?

I'm sure this isn't any colsolation, but I was once on the enemas nightly for 4 months. Bleeding came and went.....I think you really need to be more patient than 12 days.

I'd go a year before even trying any of the other meds....truly....
