Hello all,
I was diagnosed first w/ uclerative proctitis 5 years ago. 2 years later it became left-sided colitis. It responded well to Rowasa and was under control. Last year I began to experience frequent abdominal pain. I began the SCD and the pain completely went away. I am still on Rowasa however. Now, over the last month, I am experiencing frequent diarrhea in the morning accompanied by extreme urgency and difficulty "pushing it out". I llieterally spend an hour on the toilet on some mornings and then speed to work praying for green lights.
Anybody experience anything similar to this?
Thanks

Hello, I know what your going through. I have UC, diagnosed in 2007. And in the morning especially i will be in the bathroom constantly. Then by the afteroon or evening i feel like i have to go so bad, but can't! And i wish going to the bathroom would relieve some of my belly pain, but it doesn't. I'm having a flare up now, for the last couple of days, currently on no meds, but i see my GI today, and will hopefully be started on something to get some relief.

Hi Suntree,

I was diagnosed with UC in May 2008 and have been flaring since late December. This is exactly what my symptoms are. In the morning is urgency D, maybe spending 30 minutes and then once again before I leave for work. I wake up 45 minutes earlier so I am not late and still I am late sometimes.

When I feel the urgency at night and nothing comes it is just the colon spasming I think. DO NOT STRAIN OR TRY TO PUSH OUT ANYTHING! This just makes the inflamed area worse! And it will exacerbate the symptoms and urgency feelings and you will be in and out of the bathroom all night without much BM at all. I hope this helps.

Hi Suntree - welcome!

Your symptoms sound about normal for me when I'm flaring.  Are you on anything else besides for the Rowasa?  Sounds to me like you need to add some meds to get this under control - like Asacol or Colazal.

Hi..welcome to the forum!

I would say that you definitely need oral 5ASA meds in conjunction with the Rowasa....both ends treated, oral for above the sigmoid and the Rowasa for up to and into the sigmoid.

You're obviously flaring above the sigmoid, and with that active, the rectal symptoms won't be dealt with effectively, even though you're on rectal meds.

It's great the SCD helped with your pain, discomfort....

Call the GI and get an appointment asap...or if you are able, call to talk with your GI and request a script for Asacol to start.

To also deal with the diarrhea and help to slow it down a tad, you could add a fibre supplement. i use Metamucil, but there may be others that are SCD acceptable if you're still adhering to that.

Keep us posted as to how you're doing.
