Was just wondering if I am the only oddball in here who has been taking 6MP for over five years.  If so, I would like to hear your experiences.

I have been on 6MP for the past 4 years.  The first time I took it I was on it for 5 years, came off for 1-2 years, and had to go back to it. So, total of 9 years on it.   I take 100mg every day.  No problems so far...

UC since 1995 - Entire colon
Currently on Canasa, 6MP, & Colazal, Levsin

I was under the impression that if you come off 6MP it would not work for you again. Interesting. I want my doctor to let me come off of it next year to have another baby but he talked like if it has me in remission now, I should not quit because it wouldn't work to go off and then try to start back if I were to flare. Why did you stop 6MP and why did you start back?

I haven't been on it even a year yet but my doctor talked like it's use would be indefinitely.

My doctor took me off the 6MP for about six weeks last year because my pancreatic enzyme level was off the wall when I was admitted to the hospital on May 3rd.  He thought the 6MP was affecting my pancreas.  Well, by May 8th, my enzyme levels had returned to normal.  The middle of June I had my follow up appointment with my GI doctor and he put me BACK on the 6MP with close observance of blood tests.  This time he put me on 75 mgm instead of the 50 I had been taking.  My white count dropped to 2.4.  I lowered my dose to 50 mgm one day and 25 the next three months ago.  White count is still low.  I see my GI doctor March 18th.  Enzyme levels are still normal, by the way.

I had a similar conversation with the doctor about going on/off the 6mp for pregnancy. He said if I go off then it's harder to get your body to respond to it the next time. He also told me that there is a slightly higher incidence miscarriages during the first trimester and that it is transmitted in breast milk. Very tough decisions. Without being on it though it's dangerous to be pregnant and have a flare. During this last flare the doctor increased my 6mp from 75 to 100 which I know would be difficult to wean off later but right now I'm trying to do anything I can to get healthy.
Diagnosed when 13 and am now 25, female. Currently taking 100mg of 6mp, 60 mg of prednisone and 12 pills of asacol a day.  I tried cortifoam for this flare and it didn't work.  In the past I've tried rowasa, enemas, pentasa, colazal, sulfasalizine.  I was in a four year remission until the end of January.
