I've never not reacted to being on prednisone before. I've been on 40mg for a week and then tapered to 30mg for two weeks and went back up to 40mg a few days ago. I'm still having pain and cramping...and lots of potty time. Mucous and blood mixed in.

My doc is tryin to get me put on Imuran... my question is... is Imuran stronger than pred????

Latest-Went to ER cuz I couldn't eat for 5 days and was having severe flare up after passing two kidney stones after a week of the flu. (long month)
GI tried to taper me off of pred fairly fast in hopes to keep me on Lialda and at a lower dosage of pred. to try mesalamine enemas again.  Starting the Imuran as soon as labworks done... longer pred time....yippee *rolls eyes*
Medications:Prednisone 40mg Again! (groan)Lialda 4 a day until Imuran
I am so sick of this disease!

Pred never worked for me.  I was on 60mg for over a month with no results.  Imuran is an immunosuppressant to it may work better than pred -without many of the side effects.  One thing - pred usually works much faster - Imuran may take 3-6 months to kick in.

Have you tried using the rectal meds together with the pred to get this under control?

maybe try them again now.  I wasn't able to keep them in and my GI gave me this advice - take Immodium 1/2 hour before using the enema (even just 1/2 pill or 1 pill).  Warm the bottle - squeeze out the air - and then only insert 1/2 the bottle.  After you are able to hold it like this for a few nights - try 3/4 of a bottle and then the whole thing.  This really helped me and I was able to hold the whole thing for the whole night within a week or so.  After a few nights I didn't even need the immodium anymore.

I have had UC for a long time now, first diagnosed in 1990, haven't had a flare up in several years, I take Sulfasalazine every 12 hours. But when I do have a flare-up the Doc gets me up to 90mg of prednisone a day and that seems to do the trick along with upping the the sulfasalazine to 3 or 4 gm every 12 hours. The pred was always a double edged sword, made me feel better and took away all my aches and pains, but the emotional side affects were terrible, one time I had a flare-up I was working on the Onco Unit, was on 90mg of Pred, a day. I was taking care of dieing Cancer Patients, and was cryng right along with the patients and families. I begged the Doc to wean me off of it quickly, an RN just can't be that emotional while caring for patients!

Well sweetmelody I empathize with you, it is no fun I know, but as least for me it seems as the years progress I have fewer and fewer flare-up. I do have to get a colonoscopy every year, with having had UC so long and with my family history and everything but that is a small prioce to pay! I do hope your treatment gets it under control and in remission.
Good Luck to You

I second Mamas Boys advice about trying the enemas again and starting with half and working your way up to a whole one. That's what my GI had me do and I didn't have any problems.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

I did the same thing - using about 1/2 the enemas because there is so much inflammation and swelling in the rectum they want to come right out.  I laid still for 30 minutes.  First 15 was painful but MADE them stay in there, absorb and then I was ok.  They did help untl I started having worse bleeding so doctor took me off.  I am now on prednisone and 6MP (2 days of that) and everything going great SO FAR!!
