I am so tired of this yo-yo! mad

Why is it that when I have a good day - meaning I will have ONE solid bm, full length but not full caliber and then the next day I'm running to the bathroom again with D 4-5x's????  Why can't it be one or the other?  It's like a major tease!  However, when I go to the bathroom with the solid, my gut seems to hurt more; pain below my bellybutton and major rectal discomfort (probably hemmies).  So is it an even trade off???  I have a colonoscopy in a month to find out what is going on.  But I'm just frustrated a little.  I had 2 good days and now following is 2 very bad days.  Monday I had D several times with the shakes and chills and some pain - no bleeding though thank goodness.  Today I am still having D but no pain and chills.  I just wish that I will be one or the other ya know??? sad

Keep a food diary and see if its maybe something you ate. Certain additives and sweetners will do that to me.

I was just about to post about this too! Monday I had an awesome day. One great bm. I was so happy!

Today has been a complete downer so far. Six bms since midnight. Yes, that was TWO that woke me up. They seemed solid, so I thought my body was just getting rid of excess "waste". But the last two have had the red mucous and have not been formed.

Drat! If it's still like this tomorrow, I'm calling my doc. This just sucks.

I second the food diary. It has really helped me solve which foods hurt and which ones heal! Perhaps something you are eating is causing issues for you.

This happens to me too, but I think it's IBS. One day I won't have any BMs at all, and then two days later I'll have 5. And yes, I keep a food diary and know which foods bother me. But things are just irregular.

What gets to me is that I am on so much stinkin' medication and it doesn't seem to be working like it should. It works well in the beginning and then it's like my body gets used to it or resistant. So frustrating!

I kept a food diary a while ago and I have already eliminated the foods that bother me. If I eliminate anything else, I would be living on air! lol

Actually, even though I'm not looking forward to the prep, I am looking forward to my cscope in April. I am curious to know what the heck is going on. I am thinking though that he won't find much with the scope and tell me that I have IBS. I am really starting to think that is my issue. And if that is the case, then I am going to be so confused! Because what is good for IBS is not good for Uc. I read alot of stories here about people that have both and the complications that come from having both.

Dawn, I am keeping my fingers crossed for you and I hope that it doesn't get any worse.

I have the same thing, the constant yo-yo. The thing that sucks for me is that I consistently have bleeding, that part never seems to go away. I hate not knowing from day to day if I'm going to go 2 or 3 times a day or 5 or 6 times a day. It's so stressful. I had a good few days and then last night I was up twice during the night..yuck!

Red, I know EXACTLY how you feel- I was just complaining to my GI last week about the same thing- a run of good days, then an absolutely horrid day. While I don't keep a food diary, I know it's not food related- I basically eat the same things every day, & though our dinners change, it's a routine of the usual faves.... I think it may be IBS also. I'm on tons of meds, which help somewhat, but not with this. I had been taking Culturelle, which is just lactobacillus. My GI suggested I switch probiotics. He gave me a handout from some GI journal, & apparently the "best" strains are the bifido & the saccharomyce boulardi (which is actually a yeast). I bought some Primal Defense Ultra, which has both of those, & started it last week. So far, I have been more regular- no more days of 1-2 bm's then a day of 6-8. So we'll see...I wish I had a better suggestion, but it may help.

diagnosed with UC '02
meds-
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade-10mgs/kg- since 4/07
Imuran- 150mgs/day
Culturelle
Fiber supplement

Same thing has happened to me in the past week. One day 1BM, next day 6BM's.
31 yr old female currently breastfeeding
Diagnosed 2/29/08 with Mild Universal UC
I've had UC since 2000 but was in remission for most of those 8 years med free
Lialda Colazal & Asacol made symptoms worse, MUCH worse
Not taking any meds for now. May be on 6mp soon?

Ugh, me too. Especially this past week, what's up with that???

Just yesterday I was a little startled to not have to use the restroom for six hours straight, including two 30 minute car rides. Ate a very mild dinner (soup, salmon), then ran to the bathroom with cramps, gas and "red sand" every 20 minutes, all evening.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated all wheat/gluten from my diet. Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion), trying Curamin.
Flaring, seasonal? or supplements too harsh? Back on prednisone, trying 15/20 mg. Appt 3/6 to discuss Humira, etc.

I was wondering about the same thing - seasonal stuff. Maybe adding another probiotic would help me?

I flared badly about this time last year - it was actually march 13th. I remember that night too well - horrible sharp pains like barbed wire in the guts and then the blood came. Fingers crossed that I can keep it from getting to that point again.

It's been 2 hours since the 7th bm - which was redder than the last.

I'm at the half way point - so if I'm still feeling bad tomorrow, I'll call the doc for options. My last appointment he lowered my Imuran dose, so maybe upping that again will help?

I'm also wondering if the toothache that I've had is contributing. I have another appointment for that this afternoon.

Going on 4 hours now. But afternoons have always been my best time during a flare... I think I'll go take a Bentyl to prevent issues while in the dentist's chair!

Fingers still crossed hoping it's a blip!

Hi sherry....are you near your period?like in the next week or two? Hormone fluctuations could have something to do with it.

Can't wait to hear the outcome of your c-scope....

Food can have some impact on your symptoms, and if the rectum is even a teeny bit inflamed, a solid stool will hurt more, especially if you're going more than once or twice in a short period of time.

I can relate to a setback...I'm back to nightly meds and have already been on the throne a few times. Butt retching...and butt wrenching...

Hope you feel better soon.

Since I don't have my cycle anymore I lost track of when my time would be. But usually how I can tell if my hormones are acting up is when my breasts start to hurt because I have fibrocystic breasts. They act up when my supposed cycle is coming. And they aren't sore in the least so I don't think it's that. I hope the Rowasa helps you in no time Q - I'm sure they will like they have in the past! :)

Hello All,

Even i have the same problem.
Good days and bad days..........
Some days no blood, no mucos and everything is fair as a normal person with 1 -2 bw's in the morning..
After some days suddenly there will be 3-4 in the morning.............
Not sure what to do..very confused and whether to go with prednisone (10mg like..) for few days at very low dosages..
Right now i'm on Colozal (3x3) and Canasa every other day.......
I'm taking Natures Way - Primadophilus Reuteri 2 a day.........
Scheduled an appointment with my GI, but really when i go to him i won't have any issues that day.......man this sucks.......
What you guys advise in my situation..please suggest..........

Thanks in advance

Thanks Sherry.....tonight is better than this morning..ugh!

Interesting about your breasts as the barometer, but makes sense...something to consider to connect . not that anything can be done about it necessarily, but your doctor should check you for raised follicle stimulating hormones anyway.,and if they're high, maybe that's part of the cause.

hope you improve soon

i think the canasa isn't enough and you should at least try the retention enemas.  If you can't do the liquids, 5ASA... you could consider the steroid foams.
It doesn't matter if you have an issue the day you see the doc...you are still clearly flaring, like a mild simmering...and that's got to be dealt with.

My advice about the pred is....don't consider it unless you've exhausted the rectal ones.

That's what I was thinking too Q about Happyliving's situation. HL, it seems that you should be on a regular dosing of a rectal med. Even if you don't want to do the enemas every night, then consider using the Canasa nightly instead of every other night. Do you notice better bm's the morning after using the Canasa the night before?

And Heather, ummm what the heck is raised follicle stimulating hormones???? lol My breasts get so sore around my cycle time that sometimes I resort to Darvocet just so I can sleep. There is not much my doc can do about it but control the pain until it eases. But I do try to do the suggestions I read online to help ease the pain and for the most part it works fairly well. And I hear ya on the mornings! Agh! I hardly ever have issues at night but the morning.......well now that is a different story!

Red - you've got the nasty FC breast pain too? Miserable stuff. The only thing that really helps me it trying to completely avoid caffine (sp?) at all times. Very hard to do! I can really tell months when I've had more than enough.

I'm happy to report that I've only had one bm today and none during the night. However, my face is all swollen from this tooth and I've had to start another z-pack for the abcess. I have a referral to an endodotist about it - but that's March 25. The darvocet the dentist prescribed doesn't help at all. I'm actually better with Tylenol! Weird. Maybe the one darvocet I took yesterday evening helped my guts?

Fingers crossed. Just love the yo-yo...

Dawn, I didn't know I had the FC breasts until a couple years ago. I had a huge cyst (about the size of a golf ball) suddenly appear on my right breast. I went to the doc because it hurt like hades. She drained it and sent me in for my first mammogram. Wow, talk about painful! And then I went in for an ultrasound afterward. That is when I found out that I had fibrocystic breasts. But it explained alot! I always wondered why they were soooo sore at certain times of the month. They are (the cysts) very small and undetectable during a self exam so that is why I didn't know I had them but according to the ultrasound, I have tons of them in there. I am supposed to go in every year or two now for a mammogram. I try to keep my caffeine intake down too but I HAVE to have my morning coffee! lol After the coffee though, I don't drink any caffeine during the day. I also try to avoid salt intake which I've read can aggravate things.

I'm so sorry to hear of our abcessed tooth! That must be painful :( I've never had one but I've had plenty of toothaches and they are the worse! I find that when I take Darvocet, my bowels behave themselves the day after but don't let that fool you. Still keep a vigilance on your symptoms.

Hi Red... Good days/bad days. I certainly had those when I was flaring. May I suggest, in addition to the food diary that has been suggested and which you already keep, that you keep an "activity" diary? I figured out that some of my good day/bad day was due to how much I exerted myself the day before. I stubbornly believed that doing some exercise would help, but when I was flaring it was actually rest, rest, and more rest that I needed. The less rest I got, the more lousy I felt the next day. Everyone is different, so maybe if you track that you can see how it impacts you.
