Is being this confused after a recent diagnosis normal?

My signature states where things were prior to today appointment.  I went back prior to a scheduled appointment with symptoms acting up again.  This is the changes made

1) Left Asacol at 3 tabs 3x day
2) Stopped Rowasa
3) Started prednisone 20mg daily for two weeks (until I go back).  Not happy about this one!!!

My main pain seems to be under my ribcage and right behind my belly button.  The pain down the left side seems to have let up most of the time.

Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

He only did 20mg because of how horrible I felt on 40mg back in January. That is what I don't like about it...short term wonders. What about long term??

that should be a concern....did you not discuss other rectal meds such as the steroid ones?

not necessarily....i get upper gastro pain when i'm flaring...gas mostly, but it's there.

Try not to think pain in one spot = to where it actually is. If you have rectal inflamation, it needs to be addressed directly. I forget if you were improving on the Rowasa?

You may have expressed about your trip and the doc thinks he'll have you feeling better sooner...but you do have to taper. Maybe while tapering you could ask about the steroid rectal meds then.

When do you see the doc again?

quincy

I don't seem to have gas pains. It's a sharp pain right behind my belly button.

I really didn't seem much of a difference on the Rowasa. To many good and bad days mixed together to really tell. He did mention jumping to the prednisone because of the trip. He is trying 20mg for 2 weeks (go back 3/18). Depending on how I am feeling he will start to taper. If not we determine to increase or stay the same. I absoulutely hate the side effects of this drug but this is so all new I have no clue about other options.

He did suggest vitamins. I had heard the flinstones vitamins were good but is the dosage for children and should I talke more? I also purchased some probiotics (did not mention this to him..totally forgot after he mentioned prednisone) and have no clue if I should follow the dosage on the back of the bottle. I also see a lot of people here on fish oil. I have flax seed oil and wonder if that is about the same thing.

I HAVE to feel better before this trip!!!

I had pain behind my belly button, that's where the transverse colon resides, However, from years of UC my colon had narrowed to the width of a pencil. Passing stool in this area became painful.

I took a couple of Tylenol and it helped greatly.
UC diagnosed in 1987.

Hi...you werent on the Rowasa any where near the time to get improvement...but that could be based on the time requirements your doctor or you had set up for improvement.

Your doctor could have given you an antispasmodic to see if that helped while still on the Rowasa. What you may perceive as gas or spasming isn't necessarily.

I get what i perceive to be the same pain on occasion. It's definitely flare related, however. The dicyclomine helps a lot.

I would suggest a good quality of vitamins for adults. I use Sisu multi vitamins, but have tried GNC. They have formulas for women, men..etc. good price as well.

The flax seed oil and fish oils are for omegas. the fish oil is usually straight omega 3, i think...but not sure about the flax seed oil. research will help...just don't take high doses to start..can be confusing when one has lots of symptoms.

Which probiotic did you purchase? what are the directions?

I hope you feel better soon...

Sounds like I have a lot of research to do.

As far as the probiotic I bought Natures Finest and it says to take one daily.

Quincy answered most of your questions. But I just wanted to throw in that I HIGHLY recommend Forvia. This is a multi-vitamin designed for Ibd'ers. You can only get it online at www.forvia.com and it usually takes a week before you get it-which isn't too bad. It is higher in iron, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, folic acid and calcium which is the vitamins we need the most. I have always taken vitamins but it wasn't until I started on Forvia that I felt a world of difference.
