I notice a lot of people here are on probiotics and fish oil.  I picked up some probiotics at the pharmacy today.  I have flax seed oil here.  Can anyone tell me the difference between fish oil and flax seed oil and which is better.

Thanks

Fish oils are fats found in fish, particularly fish which live in deep, cold water fish such as sardines, salmon, mackerel, cod, and tuna. Fish oil is thought to be healthful because it is composed of rich sources of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega-3 type. The two most heavily researched fish oils are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Salmon oil would be considered fish oil although some companies choose to market it differently.

Flax seed oil comes from the Flax seed. This natural oil (also known as Linseed Oil) is highly recommended for the general well being and whole body nutrition and is considered to be nature's richest source of omega-3 fatty acids that are required for the health of almost all body systems.

Flax Seed Oil contains omega-6 and omega-9 essential fatty acids, B vitamins, potassium, lecithin, magnesium, fiber, protein, and zinc and also provides approximately 50% more omega-3 oils than what you could get from taking fish oil.

Although I take fish, flax and Udo's oils, I'd have to disagree that flax oil is preferred over fish oil. Here are some articles to consider:

Fish oil is more efficient for UC, in a nutshell. But you have to take enteric-coated, or it's pretty much useless (for UC, I'm not speaking more generally).

I use both, as well as olive oil. Nothing is set in stone.
Dx:

Left-sided UC, Jun 2005. Flex-sig only... clear for first 20cms, then inflamed through next 30cms.

Therapies:

Pharmaceutical: Lialda 2/day, Rowasa/hydrocort as needed
Probiotics: Primadophilus Bifidus
Naturals: Caprylic Acid, Vit ABCDE, Zinc, Turmeric, Bromelain, Fish Oil, Flax Oil

What do you mean by enteric-coated?
