I posted to soon about feeling better after starting prednisone!!!  UUGGGHH  I am so frustrated!  I stopped the Rowasa last night and started the prednisone.  I was feeling so great this morning and pretty much all day.  Tonight stools have been loose and rectal pain.

Could this be from stopping the rowasa.  Could the rectum flare that quickly from just skipping one night?  I still have rowasa here.  Should I just start it again tonight?

I'm tired of this already!!

Yes, you should go back on the Rowasa. Many people can't and really shouldn't just stop a rectal med cold turkey. It should be tapered. Maybe you should try a half of a bottle tonight to see if it still helps and slowly taper yourself off that way.

My rectum is on fire.  I think I will use it again tonight.  GI seems so set on getting me off this stuff for some reason.  If it helps I'm all for the pain in the "hiney" (pun intended) that it is to get the stuff in.  I'd use it every day the rest of my life if the bleeding would just go away.  I haven't had this much blood since starting the meds on 2/13.  Tonight it was enough to make the toilet water pink.

I am not a very patient person so this is wearing on me very quickly!

Thanks for your input.

Oh yes, definately in that case use the Rowasa! I can so relate to wanting to be better and NOW! I think that is one of the toughest things, to have patience to let the meds do their job. When I get impatient, I have to remind myself - ok now if you were in a constantly warm/hot environment with bacteria galore and semi processed food being thrown at you 24/7, would you be able to heal quickly???? lol Yes the colon is a very hostile place for healing to go on that is for sure.

Prednisone also makes me feel better through the day...and the evenings can still be rough.
I can't imagine what problem your GI has with Rowasa, if it was working for you.

49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated all wheat/gluten from my diet. Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion), trying Curamin.
Flaring, seasonal? or supplements too harsh? Back on prednisone, trying 15/20 mg. Appt 3/6 to discuss Humira, etc.

Well...pooey on the doctor. I'm using it tonight. If there is no reason I shouldn't use it with prednisone then it can't hurt anything and then I'll call tomorrow. This has been going on since January 1st. Enough already. Of course i wasn't diagnosed until 2/13. Did I mention I'm also a procrastinator :)

Since the doc put you on a lower dosage of pred, the Rowasa should be continued anyway. Did you tell the doc you were going on holidays?

When do you see the doc next?

When again are you going on holidays?

Ask the doc for refill prescriptions for Rowasa.....as I mentioned earlier, you weren't on them any where long enough...especially if you were having improvement, he should have given you enough refills for at least 3+ months nightly, see you during that time, give you more refills to taper to maintenance.

I have a setback, had a horrific morning/afternoon....6 times white-knuckling writhing pain...couldn't believe how a turd the size of a pea could feel like a watermelon..OMG. The last one in the afternoon, which was just kind of granular poo , I had a bit of blood. This evening..the 7th bm today, no blood, less pain and butt throbbing. Of course, I upped the bentylol and will be sticking to the enemas nightly for a month..regardless.

Oh, my point....my flares are really mild, and this past one last Christmas got me at most vulnerable after being sick with 3 colds during the Fall. Anyway, I bled a tiny bit then just like today....humbling, but an obvious symptom that's telling me I'm yo-yoing too much and tapering way to fast.....

Hang tough...go the ride for the enemas and if they get you in remission, tapering the pred might be just that much easier...

I'm a procrastinator when it comes to talking to authority...but worth it when you get a result that will help make your approaching holiday less stessful.

I called the doctor back. He put me back on the Rowasa but I only have 8 more nights worth and I don't go back until the 18th. UUGGHH Just refill the darn thing. I'm supposed to call back on Monday and let him know how I'm doing. I am going to insist on a Refill and I am going to refuse to go off it until after we get back from vacation.

The only thing I don't like about Rowasa is how it makes me feel in the mornings. I hate the numerous trips to the bathroom I make when I'm on it. Once I get past the morning I feel pretty decent.

Prednisone makes the day go by easier but mornings (before it's kicked in) and nights (because it's been awhile since the last dose) are the worst until everything heals up.

Keep going, you'll see improvement soon.

Diagnosed January 07 - but realize I've been living with minor flare-ups for 10+ years.

Asacol 3 pills/3 times a day.

Definitely stick with the Rowasas.  Why can't you just have the pharmacy call the doc for a refill?  My doc gives me enough refills on Rowasa to last at least 6 months!  That way I never run out.  And I fill them as necessary.

good called...yeah, what's with the doc and no refills...don't get that. He has a plan, clearly.

You're flaring...you'll make numerous trips to the bathroom.  Seems normal and it's good it's not all day.  Count the improvements...

Not that this is any consolation....but I was once on the nightly enemas for 4 months..then started to taper.   It was what I needed, and the doctor said "be patient"...as usual.  tongue
Keep us posted.

Good advice.
No need to have your doc nickel and dime you on the Rx.

I also acquire a big supply now and then, via mail order. You should see the box! My doc and I laugh about the forktruck that appears at my door....
