Entering a dreaded flare after being on Azathioprine for 1 year.  My question to those of you who have experienced this is did you require less steroids to get you out of the flare.  I normally have to take 40mg for a few weeks then taper but I am hoping that I will get away with a lower dose or what is the point of Aza.

I am on 6mp and now when I flare it's usually more mild but if I need any additional meds, I can get by on rectal meds now. Don't assume you have to go immediately to oral steroids every time you flare. Try the rectal meds first.

The thing is I have been taking them for 3 months and then my doctor told me to reduce to one every second night for 1 month and I have got worse.   Going back to once a night and hopefully that will sort it.  I hate MOONFACE and all the other crappy side effects that come with pred.

Are you talking about that you are on rectal meds now? If so, which one?

Been on 6MP for over five years and NO...it doesn't keep me out of flares.  I have gotten a flare every year with last year being my worse since diagnosed.  I was on the prednisone for seven months last year. sad

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.
