A couple months ago, I noticed I started having diahrrea--In fact, I first became sick after attending a state fair, which led me to think I had food poisoning.   But then I noticed I was having diahrrea every day--no blood, but just diahrrea, once a day.  This continued for a few months and then gradually worsened, as I started having to go to the bathroom 5-6 times a day.  I had a colonoscopy and the GI said I had ulcerative colitis.  He put me on prednisone and Lialda.  I was on both medications for almost two months, and while I saw a decline in my symptoms, I never achieved full remission and continued to have diahrrea from time to time.  In addition, I began having abdominal cramps and pains.

I decided recently to stop all medications and have gone to using just some herbal supplements.  I'm having less diahrrea and more formed bowel movements.  I'm going to the bathroom 3-5 times per day, and I no longer have as much abdominal pain or cramps.  Like I said, I never had bleeding (except when I took Aspirin or other meds that induced bleeding), but when I do have diahrrea, I notice that I tend to go right after I eat a meal, and that much of my meal is undigested, which leads me to think that I may have leaky gut, or trouble completely digesting my food.  Someone suggested a digestive enzyme--is there anything else I should be taking?

The fact that I have now been off meds for several weeks and not really flaring (unless having 3-5 solid bowel movements a day with diahrrea maybe once a week is a flare) leads me to think maybe there is something else involved, or maybe something else I should try.  Like I said, this all started after I ate food from a vendor at a state fair several months ago, and had diahrrea several times that night and day.  Maybe I have a parasitic infection.

Yes, I recommend GHT's digestive enzymes. I have been on oxygen element max too to increase pH of my body as well as to increase the absorption rate for all the things I eat. I was on prednisone and 6mp but symptoms free since but my doctor wants me to be on Asacol just in case.

Get your stool tested to check for bacteria and parasites. You will never know unless you get checked out. You could try seeing another GI and have your colonoscopy results reviewed and see what the new GI says. Did they take biopsies on any inflammed tissue? It is strange to have 3-5 BMs a day. When I was "normal" I had one a day, no cramps or urgency. Something is definitely going on with your gut but it could be many things. I think I have leaky gut or IBS but I have UC too.

You could also take fibre supplements daily and indefinitely, that's what my GI recommended and it's helped tons with formed stools and less frequency as well.

:)

Sounds like you very well likely could have picked up a bacterium in your food.  I agree with sicklygirl.  Ask your doctor for a script to have your feces tested at a local lab.
With UC it doesn't take much to trigger a flare.  Last year I started flaring after taking a bubble bath with cheap Dollar Store bubbles.  Little sores started to appear on the outside of my vaginal area a day after taking that bath.  Within 48 hours the mucus and blood appeared..then you know the drill....all hell broke loose.  My GI doctor explained that it doesn't take much to attack an already weakened immune system.  That flare lasted seven months with a ten day hospital visit too.  UGH!  From now on I only take showers.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

Oh and one more thing....never stop prednisone cold turkey.  I had a friend who developed Addison's Disease from doing that.
