I was put on antibiotics yesterday.  In a previous post several of you mentioned probiotics.  I took them for about a week and they were killing my stomach so I stopped.  But, now with the antibiotics I probably need to go back on them.

Can anyone share the amount of probiotics they use and the brand?  I have no clue about probiotics.  Still very much in the learning phase of all this!!

Thanks

I use Culturelle, as it seems to have the highest number of live cells of the probiotics that are fairly inexpensive and easy to find. I normally take one a day, but I started taking two a day after getting this tummy bug. I'll go back to one a day once I'm back to where I was before I got sick.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

Probiotics are different for everyone. What works good for one person may not for another person. I tried a couple recommended from people on here but I couldn't take them and then I found one that actually caused me no distress. It's all trial and error.

If you can't tolerate the probiotics right now or you can't find the right fit for you. You can eat yogurt instead at least until you get off the antibiotics. It has a smaller percentage of bacteria but it is better then nothing.

Hi Risan...what probiotics were you taking? You mention killing your stomach...do you mean you were having discomfort/gas/pain from them?

You would be best to purchase enteric coated ones.

I've had much success with Custom Probiotics six strain powdered blend and Natren's Healthy Trinity. I agree it does take some trial and error. I've tried several cheaper brands that did nothing and one with soil based organisms that made my symptoms worse.

If you're sensitive to them, you should start slowly and ramp up to the recommended dose. That's the nice thing about powders - you can take as much or as little as you like.

Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, l-glutamine, vitamin D and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free diet. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

I've had success with Primdadophilus reuteri made by natures way, it's affordable (I pay 29.00 CDN) and only one/day is needed, it has also aided completely with my lactose intolerance and it has guaranteed intestinal release... it did not cause me any pain/issues and I still take it daily (for the last 4ish yrs now) with no problems...always take your probiotics at least 2 hours after you're done taking your antibiotics for the day.

:)

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)

I'm taking Ultimate Flora, it's jam-packed, 50 billion of a wide variety of strains.
They also sell a 200 billion version of Ultimate Flora, which I would use if I ever must take antibiotics.
I buy it at a local organic foods grocery, out of the refrigerators.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated all wheat/gluten from my diet. Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion), trying Curamin.
Flaring, seasonal? or supplements too harsh? Back on prednisone, trying 15/20 mg. Appt 3/6 to discuss Humira, etc.

Peety, once I'm out of Culturelle I may try that Ultimate Flora. It looks like it's really well priced for the number of live cultures in it!
