anybody else taking this supplement? I started about 2 weeks ago, & while it initally seemed to make things worse, I've leveled off & seem to be doing pretty well. Less bm's, at least! I've read one thing by Jini Patel, written about 3 years ago, how soil-based organisms can cause health problems down the road. After searching the net & finding nothing, absolutely ZERO info to back up her claim, I'm...... confused??? So for those of you who use this, how do you like it? How long have you been taking it? Any weird health issues since you started? And if anyone has any documented info to back up Jini Patel's claims, please let me know- I may try Natren's stuff, but why bother if the Primal Defense is fine?

In a teleseminar, Natasha Trenev claimed there haven't been enough studies of SBOs to know their long-term effects. She also went into a detailed discussion of how they're "spore formers" and how these spores are difficult, if not impossible, to eradicate. I didn't follow that part of the discussion... she can get pretty technical. The Trenevs are the owners of Natren which you could argue makes them biased. On the other hand, the Trenev family is much respected for their years of research and development in the field of probiotic supplementation. They are certainly not new comers to the game.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, l-glutamine, vitamin D and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free diet. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

Yes, that is what I've heard too, from Jini Patel- that the spores are nearly impossible to kill, even with super heavy-duty antibiotics, & that they can possibly cause health complications. But, when you try to actually find any concrete research on this, nothing! Absolutely nothing. There are a lot of positive reviews & info on the SBO's, which seem to mostly be from companies that sell them. And to be fair, a decent amount of alternative therapy magazines & such also claim their greatness. I do wonder if the claims that Jini Patel & Natasha Trenev have made are biased- I wish they would quote some actual studies! Because in Jini Patel's case, apparently she originally raved about Primal Defense, then switched gears abruptly & made the spore claims, & now backs Natren's products. I think unless I do find some concrete evidence, then I'll stick with the Primal Defense- although I do plan to check out if my local health food store carries Natren. I may give them a try & see if I notice a difference between the 2. It's a little crazy- while doing probiotic/SBO research, I uncovered some info about how probiotics can actually be dangerous in immune-suppressed individuals! Yah, a VERY small # of people have had some pretty scary results, from weird bacterias colonizing their bodies & going haywire. So again, you have to take internet research with a grain of salt. Anyone else? Give me some feedback, people! And thanks princesa- I knew you'd chime in!

Eva Lou, you raise some interesting questions which I'll put to Jini and let you know her response.

Ok, I have been researching these SBO's for the past 2 days! Basically, the "worst" one is bacillus subtilis- one of the SBO's in Primal Defense. I just now read an EPA report that says unless you are severely immune-suppressed (leukemia, cancer, etc) & unless you are exposed to massive amounts of bacillus subtili, it's safe for human consumption. It has been shown to be a direct cause of bacteremia (Which I had once while hospitalized! Prior to taking any SBO, I might add) in 2 out of 24 baccilus-related bacteremia cases. This is out of a grand total of around 1050 bacteremia cases, over a 6 1/2 year period. I'm gonna risk it! Check it out- http://www.epa.gov/biotech_rule/pubs/fra/fra009.htm.  Any of the other ingredients in the Primal Defense are a bunch of Lactobacillus strains, S. Boulardii, & Bifido strains...I feel like I've taken a crash course in microbiology. But at least now I'm fairly certain that Primal Defense won't somehow colonize my entire body with some wacked out, drug resistant spore! Famous last word, huh? tongue

Jini is fantastic and am using her book to see how it goes.. one thing though - the book is like an advertisements for Natren, Georges Aloe Vera and her own enemas etc....

Diagnosis Oct 07 and then Aug 08: Inditerminate Patchy Colitis. Also suffer from Peptic Ulcers could be related to Asacol. Current Medication: 500mg Asacol Suppositories, 800mg Asacol Tablets x 2 a day.
